I own an android tablet with ice cream sandwich and for some reason lately I have been wondering if an iPad would have been better. I don't necessarily hate android but I don't feel it is all that great either. There is a lot of stuff about it that annoys me. There are so many crappy games, a lot of the apps aren't very good, there are some stability issues now and again. I just kind of have this idea in my head that having an iPad would be some magical device where there are countless amazing apps and everything runs smooth and great and fast. Like there would be nothing to really complain about.
However, I have only tried iPads in stores for a few minutes, and while they seem quite nice, maybe my impression isn't realistic. So I am wondering, to all of you that have or have had an iPad, did you think it was a great device or do you have a lot of gripes about it? Is this just a case of the grass is always greener on the other side.

(501 posts)I use it for everything. I purchased Pages and Numbers and they work like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. I use it to surf the web, post on DU, and I have it linked to my Dropbox and Evernote accounts. I purcased a keyboard/case for it and it works like a mini laptop. I love it.

(100,080 posts)I was having a hard time deciding between the iPad and an Android based tablet like the Samsung Galaxy Tab but I went with the iPad - I really like it so far.

(3,072 posts)Should I trade in my current tablet, which has 4x the ram and twice the processing power of as a first gen ipad but with an operating system I really dont like, so something more primitive. I would love the operating system of an ipad. I have an iphone 4s and i like iOS far more than android. Then again i may be a fool to trade in a 6 month old tablet with 1gb of ram and dual core 1.2 GHz processor for a 2.5 year old tablet with 256mb of ram and a single 1 gb processor, all over an operating system. I suppose i could go with an ipad 2 but my current tablet is worth about $250 ( same as a first gen ipad) and ipad 2 is about $350. It is only $100 but my wife kill me if i spend more money on another tablet. I promised her a much needed vacation at the end of the year and all extra money is going to that.

(4,056 posts)I love it in an unholy, sick way! Seriesly, I don't even go to restaurants or hotels unless they have free wifi. What's the point of life without a Pad and a hot spot???
But here's my rational analysis: I've played around with my Dad's Kindle Fire which runs Android apps. And it's totally a great tablet for the price. But it's limited: The screen is small, and some websites don't have Adroid apps for download. Also, God help you if you're like me and have craploads of songs on ITunes. It doesn't translate to Android at all.
The one good thing is Android can run Adobe Flash, and Apple can't (or won't). Although I haven't encountered too many situations where that has ruined my IPad experience.
So to sum it up, maybe you want to hang on to your tablet a bit longer, since there's good things about it. But I'm very happy with all of Apple's products, and I would recommend an IPad in your future!

(23,272 posts)I was aggravated at the IPad's keyboard. Its really hard to do any kind of extensive writing (even a longish, newsy email). I needed youtube because a lot of my business involves being able to watch sales videos posted there and I couldn't get that IPad to clear the cache in order to be able to get the app to download that I needed.
So I gave it back and bought the Kindle Fire. I can play the youtube vids without trouble and have a lot of the other stuff I need without having to worry about modifications. I still hate the mini touch-screen keyboards. I use a stylus and curse.
Bottom line though I saved a ton of money and got a machine that's better suited for my needs.

(70,706 posts)I'm waiting for the HD 8.9" to arrive at the end of November and therefore don't know what else I'm talking about here. Also, there is a wall charger for the HD, and it got here and I discovered it's the same one for the regular Kindles pre-Fire, so could have saved $20 there ($10 when ordered with the HD).

(3,072 posts)I am very conflicted now. I tried an iPad 2 and 3, both were amazing. I also tried a kindle fire HD and I really liked the streamlined version of android. Then there was the nexus 7 which has android 4.1. I like it a lot more than ice cream sand which. Then again a newer version of the tablet I currently have is coming out in a few weeks with Jelly Bean on it too and it is only $250. And now i hear there is an ipad mini coming out and maybe a nexus 10 for just $300. Damn!
The choices are overwhelming now. I was looking at tablets just a year ago and all that was out was the iPad and a ton of horrible android abominations. Things have changed a lot since last summer. I have a lot of thinking to now.

(168 posts)LOVE IT! I do e-mails on it, watch movies and tv shows via netflix and hulu. I am a magazine junkie, so I have all my glossy magazines on it now - great! Books, news, photos, notes, calendar - it's so great that you can now have it all in one spot, on one device. I also use it for work; I have a grade book app on that I use to grade my students - syncs with the Dropbox application, works excellent! Gone are the days of notebooks and sticky notes: now I can take notes during meetings and while I am on the phone on my iPad. I also play the occasional game on it - mostly old-fashioned puzzle games. The possibilities are endless! Most of the time everything works great. Of course sometimes apps have glitches - but that's not the ipad's fault. I have the newest ipad, the cheapest version (16 gb, wifi only). Whenever I upgrade, I will probably go for 32 gb. All those glossy magazines take up a lot of memory!
I can highly recommend the iPad!
