Can someone explain?-

the terrible, yet often hilarious subtitles that accompany some of the videos linked to on the Home page? They are awesome, but I am often distracted by them-not because they are there, but because they seem to be created by a program that has limited access to English words. I end up reading the text for fun instead of listening to the actual content.

I can hear most of what happens on TV but will miss the occasional word, so I'll double-check on the captioning. I've got two TV's in the living room, a big one for picture and a small one for captioning. Often the captioning is hilarious because it's either two minutes behind, the captioner can't spell, or has just given up in disgust and is typing "everybody talking at once".

I have seen that--this is not even close. There would be no way to know what was going on in the convo if it could not be heard. I wonder if I downloaded some update that does this.
It is seriously like the Bad Lip Reading videos.
