I think it's okay. I just think it's overrated. We're going out to a sushi restaurant and my two daughters are quite excited. They're both huge fans of the stuff.

HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)Well, technically it can be interpreted as "vinegared rice". It does NOT mean "raw fish".
I use all kinds of fillings like peppers, spring onions, daikon, cucumber, mushrooms, scrambled egg, tomatoes, and damn near anything else that will fit. It's really easy to make and it's addictive. I make about three times what I know we'll eat and I'm set for lunch for DAYS!

(36,827 posts)Although the word itself literally translates to a specific kind of rice, the implication is that type of rice with raw fish.
If we took food references literally, hamburgers would be made with pork and french fries in Europe would be made from apples.
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)You have to be pretty proficient with chopsticks (Korean style) to even try to eat that. Fuck. I have to wait until after Thanksgiving is over to have any of that. Fuck, fuck, fuckety fuck.

(27,247 posts)Hope Hoops had it right-- sushi is a *rice* dish, and there are many kinds that have no fish whatsoever, raw or otherwise. For example, inari zushi is just vinegared rice inside a soft pita-type shell made of sweetened soy called "age" (ah-gay). Chirashi zushi is another rice dish that contains bits of lotus root and various vegetables, but no raw fish. Maki zushi is probably best known in the states for its Americanized version, the California roll. It might contain raw fish, but that is not always the case. And even the type of sushi that you are probably referring to, o-sushi, sometimes has scrambled egg or fish roe or some other type of non-raw-fish ingredient.
Raw fish itself is called "sashimi" (sa-shee-mee)

(43,049 posts)I suspect most sushi lovers don't really like it but are hooked on the trendiness of it all.
If you have to do all that to raw fish to make it tasty, why not just cook it?
(And yes, I do eat raw fish-- when I go fishing it can be a decent lunch.)
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)However, if it were actually nothing more than a trend, it would have disappeared in America a long time ago.

(12,132 posts)is the price. Good sushi is kinda spendy.
On the other hand, bargain sushi costs in much worse ways.
So I just don't go as often as I'd probably like.
Although we just got a Wasabi in our mall...it seems nice and the prices look fair...
but yeah; eel, tuna, spicy anything, miso soup, some good sake...it's all delicious and something I love to do.

(36,827 posts)There was a recent large outbreak in the US that involved raw fish, but it involved tuna derived from the scrapings of tuna carcases which were modified with stabilizers and packaged for bulk sale to grocery stores and other such outlets. In other words the sushi equivalent of pink slime. Sushi and sashimi prepared on-site by competent restaurants presents very little risk.

(37,648 posts)I'll stick with apples and things that are safer than that. I also try not to eat white rice. So....
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)Even apples aren't exactly exempt from risk.

I approach risk with the attitude of first learning what the actual risk is, then if necessary either avoiding it or mitigating it. This helps me avoid irrational fears.
The reality is there just aren't that many actual documented problems with sushi. So lots of people are eating it, and very few are getting sick. If you look at published lists of the most dangerous foods, sushi rarely, if ever seems to make the cut.

The reality is that when it comes to risk associated with foodborne illness, the thing you really should be worried about is your own kitchen.
