It was the only machine that could handle the memory. But it was still slow.

Their 2009 version had major memory-management issues and we were all very happy when 2010 fixed that.

I work in mapping, so in the past when I've worked on "basemaps" and alignment sheet sets, the aerial images were often at least 150-megs each. And there were several images per basemap. All too often, 2009 would crash on trying to open an alignment sheet with xrefs to those large image files. We couldn't get any work done! So, we went back to 2008 until the next version came out.

And for those that have no idea what language I'm speaking, here's a little video to watch

However, unlike Microsoft, they gave users the ability to switch to menu style if they didn't like the ribbon. I got used to the ribbon and now prefer it, yet Microsoft's idea of the ribbon still sucks.

And I don't see why MS went to the tablet gui for Win-8 when the majority of businesses still use desktop systems and setups. I have dual monitors and expect floating windows and a desktop, not "apps". I haven't yet seen AutoCAD or other products on Win-8, so maybe it's not as bad as it seems.

As for how all this stuff has advanced, you ought to have a look at ESRI's ArcGIS 10.1 these days

(Photoshop and Corel Painter) also use most of the same MS simple commands as for cut, paste, delete and so forth. Most of the time I'm using the toolbars in those programs and only use the keyboard to increase or decrease the brush size. AutoCAD's one or two digit abbreviated commands are odd enough that I don't confuse them with other programs. Mostly, it was that I'm used to using "DU" here and then forgot myself when I needed to use "DI" in CAD

I didn't know Pro/E was still around, either. AutoDesk keeps acquiring other programs and integrating them into their whole package. I know Inventor can do some of the things Pro/E can do, such as material testing (as I remember was one of the things Pro/E did.)

It's still in use and seems quite popular. I don't know how it compares to Photoshop or Painter, though. I've been using Painter for many years and love it, yet I've never used CorelDRAW.

Corel has a bitmap editing program which is decent, but Photoshop is a better tool.

I have noticed that with mappers you have two camps: the ones that learned Land Desktop and those that learned Civil 3D. I learned both, and hated Land. I found it overly complex, even when compared to Civil 3D (which is pretty damn complex, too.) Yet, the Lovers of Land hate Civil, and vice versa. You'd have to use an old version of Land to use it at all, though I do like AutoCAD Map. Land Fans like it, too, so maybe that's the middle ground for us

What kind of work are y'all doing?
