could someone please explain this epitaph to me?

i'm serious--i honestly don't understand what this means and i'm hoping someone can explain it:

"Evangelist without portfolio
Bloodstained Israelite"

i guess i'm really wondering what the second line means.

it is on the headstone for the guy who sang the song 'i love you' when he was the lead singer in the band 'people!' back in the late 60s

and he probably chose his epitaph.

I don;t think it has to mean anything, except maybe to him.
