(95,337 posts)I booked right after the VP debates because that was the first time I realized we were going to win this thing. I was lucky to get a room right in downtown DC (inside the security zone - I had to park like 4 blocks away and lug my luggage to the hotel).
HOWEVER......
Money is kinda iffy right now many because I have no clue what's up with my cat. So I'll probably enjoy it from TV or maybe go down for the day.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)the security zone...had forgotten about that.
All my life, I will never ever forget the excitement of walking down toward the mall to the ceremony, walking with thousands and thousands of people. Everyone happy. Everyone so proud. Last time we were 1/2 miles from the podium, but it didn't matter. And one of my favorite parts...everyone booing Bush. haha
How close did you get?
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)And it was COLD
Amazingly cold
We ate just about every meal at Wasabi, which was right around the corner from our hotel. I just googled it and they closed it!
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)and still froze. too bad about Wasabi....we are looking for really good food at neighborhood kind of places. The apartment I rented is just three blocks from the Capitol in Capitol Hill. Really excited. Had to write my Repuke Rep for tickets...hope he doesn't remember how I wrote him before telling him what a dick he was. haha
I actually don't think turn out is going to be too big. I checked on flights from Hartford the other day - still plenty of seats and only $179 RT
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)It's only a 6hour train trip. Sure the flight would be shorter between Hartford and DC but consider this.
No crazy packing laws with Amtrak
No long lines waiting to get thru security
No TSA patdowns.
The Amtrak station is located right in downtown DC - you'd probably need a $10 taxi to your hotel instead of a $30 one from the airport.
Amtrak is roomier, has wifi and even a nice bar car (although they consider potato chips an appetizer)
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)only takes an hour.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Add in time to find parking, get to the airport from parking, go thru security etc etc etc, I'd probably just enjoy the train.
WolverineDG
(22,298 posts)I loved that place!!!
BTW, I think my feet finally thawed out.

(22,298 posts)Just showed up the day before, shared a room with Lynn & her friends, then on to Philadelphia.
I think I wore at least 50 pounds of clothes that day. The walk back to the hotel was essentially a zombie walk...slow, shuffling, everyone with the same thought in their heads....get me someplace warm....

It was fun to do once. My wife had extra special priority tickets that ended up keeping her from seeing anything at all, because security closed gates for no explicable reason.
You can see and hear much better at home, on tv.
We ended up going to a Thai restaurant at 3 in the afternoon where we found other strangely bundled-up people. This was 25 miles away.

(54,379 posts)I ALWAYS have to be back here (in today's case, Germany) by Jan. 20 for work, and I haven't yet perfected my time machine (I was around when Bobby Kennedy said he dreamed of things that never were and asked, "why not?" .
