So, if this happened to you, what would you think?

I'm on the do not call list so I shouldn't be getting solicitations. The few I get are down to robocalls and are so familiar that I don't even bother answering anymore.

Now, I've been in the market for a security camera system. I locked in the company I wanted to work with. Made the decision with the first call. I'm just waiting for them to come install it, but a call comes in and I pick it up thinking it's someone from the company. It's not. It's a recorded message that says it's not a telemarketing call to sell me anything. Someone has referred my name for a free wireless camera system! Slowly, I put the receiver down. Also, the installation of the security cam with the contracted company was postponed for later this week due to unforeseen circumstances from the installer.

Okay, discuss.

I'm just wondering how I managed to get cold called on something like that when I haven't been cold called on anything in more than six months, other than the two or three regular robo calls I get.

The recording specifically said that I had been referred to them.

My guess is they got your info from the company you are dealing with, maybe when they placed the order for the equipment if it was 3rd party? Or perhaps as you were looking around someone got your name. I assume they didn't need your number because it seems anyone can find that anymore. Did you google the number that called you?
I am comparing it to when I bought a new car, I got third party warranty crap from all over the place. And now I get emails and junk mail from other dealerships showing me their new cars because apparently if you buy one you have money to buy another right after? Lol.
Just my 2 cents

Someone in the original company. They may have thought they were doing me a favor, but the system they were going to give me for free, is not what I wanted.

You should consider telling a supervisor at the company you chose about that call.
