Does Your Cat Have a Few Dozen Nicknames? (Catster)

We usually name a new cat within the first few days of meeting him or her. The name could be based on a number of things, but mostly it's based on physical markings or initial disposition.

After spending a little more time with the new kitty, we usually start to bypass the name in favor of some catchy nicknames. Through the years, my three cats have each earned crazy collections of monikers, and now I rarely address them by their original names. Here are some of those names and nicknames:

My comment:

Max (almost 5, weighs 20 lbs.) - Mad Max, Kittenus, Mr. K. Rottenus, Maximus, Giant Kitty, Catus Rottenus, The Lead Weight
Ruby (age 6, Max's kitty mom) - Mrow-mrow, Ruby Duby, Duby cat, The Hall Monitor, The Laptop

We have two cats and a dog. I laughed when I read your post, because yes - we've done this with our pets and family members. I think it shows our love. I have a cousin nicknamed Boogie because he ate his boogers as a kid, just as an example.

The dog set up homestead first, 7 yrs old, weighs in at 7.5 lbs and is fluent in yappy little dog. Original Name - Fargus. Nicknames: Toe Licker, General Shortpants, Rooster, Mommy's Boy, Cat Food Gourmand, Rat Boy, and Cat Molester (he will hump the big cat).

The first cat is daughter's ward and now dream guardian. He weighs in at 16lbs, 3 yrs old and has a wild look about him. Original Name: Magik, because of the prominent "M" on his forehead. After his first kitten health, neutering visit to the vet, he was very depressed and had to be carried around on a pillow according to my daughter, the cat nurse. His nicknames: Kittyboi, Big Kitty, Belly Licker, Purrito Bandito, and Switty (combo of Sweet-Kitty).

Second cat, less than a year old, is son's stray cat find. Matchstick rib-skinny and riddled with what the vet said was a "academic listing" of cat parasites, he's grown from that dull-straggly coat little sick-eyed thing to a cute little tweener sporting a fluffy, long skunk tail with a small white tip. He distrusts the dog, but loves Big Kitty and will lick Big Kitty's ears while trying to horn in on the cat bed.

Original Name: Mittens. I cringed because we found him this summer during the election and well, Mittens. But soon found he too was a shithead, albeit in a more playful way. He would steal the kitchen sponge (wet and what I thought was kinda heavy for him) and hide them under the son's bed. This happened several times in a row and he was caught red-pawed doing it. We also call him Little Kitty and Skunkie Boy, because he really flits that pretty tail when he wants to flirt. He seems pretty happy most of the time and is a goofy clown, like his guardian.

We have love enough for all of them.

He's a large tabby so he's got the eyeliner thing going. But his nicknames are Crazy Cat because he tears around the house like he's wild sometimes and No and Stop That because he wants to test his oversized claws out on everything. He responds to all his names.

I now take his collar off at night and then put it back on every morning. Partly so he isn't vulnerable at night when he goes out, we live next to a large natural park and often have visitors.

This juvenile came over with his two siblings during the day.

Most commonly known as T.J. but sometimes Tom, Tommy, Tom-boy, Tenacious J, and my personal favorite, "Tom-Tom, The Cat So Nice We Named Him Twice."

He's been gone over a year now but I still think about that sweet little guy every day.

20. The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot
Wed Dec 26, 2012, 04:20 PM
Dec 2012

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Big, friendly, very fine, soft, black and white long-haired cat we took over from an irresponsible neighbor. Neighbor called him Petey after the Our Gang dog because he had a black patch over a mostly white face.

Petey was very laid-back and friendly, leading to- Petey Sweety. Petey Sweety turned into Petey Pie. Petey Pie turned into Pie Guy. Pie Guy turned into Three Point (One Four)...

However we have 5 outdoor cats. When it's cold they hang out in the patio. I pet them and then run inside and wash my hands and arms b/c they are breaking out and turning red. I smear benadryl gel on them. I also sneeze and cough and wheeze. No cats in House, ever.

Big black and white boss kitty: Figaro, after Pinocchio's kitten & the opera.

His 3 nephews: Arabella, Faust, Tosca. (I'm into opera.)
They were born in August.

4th cat:Chicken Cat, so named b/c he will run off and not let us pet him.
Generic term for the young ones:The Punklets.

Generic term for all of em: The Furry Little Bastards. The Turdbuckets. Los Gatos Idiotas, Los Gatos Estupidos.
