(55,019 posts)I saw it on a friend's facebook page a while back and stole it. I think it was taken in Montana or Wyoming or one of those northern states (heh) - looks pretty old. Thought the lounge would get a kick and especially thought of Ptah and his cool old family photos.

Jethros trip came with elk cookies for the journey
Correction: this is more likely Old Colorado City (Colorado Springs at the turn of the century) or Cripple Creek. There was an eccentric goldminer in Cripple Creek who had two elk named Thunder & Buttons. Prairie Dog OByrne would ride to town on Sundays in a carriage pulled by the two elk, accompanied by Laura Belle, his friend from the red light district in Cripple Creek. All of the gentile ladies in town would turn their heads when the carriage drove by.

There is a picture of two elk pulling a carriage!

No telling - a lot of those old photos got used for gag postcards in more than one town. I've seen I don't know how many gator picture postcards attributed to just about any town in Florida.

... manufacturing plant making tools so that the spring-makers could bend wire hundreds or thousands
of times to the exact same angle/curve. The place USED to make Slinkies until they went plastic and was
owned by Mennonites (pretty nice owners -- and I'm not sure if they owned it during the Slinky-era).
.
One year, one of the owners went on a hunting trip to Wyoming (I think) and bagged hisself an elk. The
company always threw the workers a pretty nice annual Christmas Eve luncheon cooked by members of
management. When we got to the plant that morning, the menu was printed out and posted on the
bulletin board near the time clock.
.
Entrée? Spaghetti and elkballs.
.
Lots of muffled laughter. Lots of offers of "You can have mine, man!!!"
.
To our disappointment, it was NOT on purpose -- someone in the office must've noticed and changed the
menu to "Spaghetti and meatballs (made with elk meat)" by mid-morning.
.
If ever a free lunch was looked "askance at" when served... it was that one.

.
Fortunately, dessert wasn't "Hot Fudge Sundaes with Crushed Nuts".

We made a LOT of woodstove doorhandles... which are, after all, just big coiled springs because
that design dissipates heat quickly.
