I was trying to get a medical history from a new patient once, and a portion of the exchange went approximately like this:

Me: "Do you have any allergies? Medications? Foods? Environmental?"

Patient: "Well, there was this one time, must have been about forty years ago...no, wait...it was before the war...naw, couldn't have been...yeah, it was after the war, I remember, 'cause my uncle got this big blue car......wait...no...he got that before the war...that's right...and I remember, his dog would ride around in it with him....and...okay...*laughs*, one - ha! - one time, my uncle got dressed up in a gorilla suit, and scared the hell out of my aunt..."

No kidding, that's how it went. I managed to talk him through to splashdown and a return to Planet Earth; but seriously. Too much information! And none of it the kind I needed...

Word of advice for potential medical patients: give your provider the information he or she asks for, and save the storytelling for Thanksgiving with the family.

and I said just to cats (which I knew wasn't what they meant, since we were already in the OR) and they said OK, clear all the cats out and then they turned me off in about 2 seconds.
