figured I'd ask.
Do you workout? Are you a gym rat or do you do it at home?
I get bored with workouts so I mix it up.
I do a hip hop routine, Latin dance routine. I run (a little) on the treadmill. I don't like the machines unless I can read my kindle.
I do sweatin' to the oldies--stop laughing. It's fun and good cardio. I like the music. Plus I have some medical problems and when they're acting up, it's low key enough it allows me to work out. There are 4 of them each a little harder.
I also do a 'striptease' workout---now that's hard.
I love my kettle bell workouts too.
What do you do?

(66,436 posts)An hour on the elliptical walker, parked in front of the TV. "The West Wing" is a favorite while working out.
Then 30-45 minutes free weights, chest presses and sit-ups.
After gaining a metric ton or two when I was in school, sitting in class all day, eating and not exercising, this routine helped me lose 40lbs in less than a year.
Do I want to know what a striptease workout consists of?

(20,043 posts)it's in front of the tv too. But I usually put music on and read when I get on that or the treadmill. I'm not crazy about the machines, I think it's because I get bored too quickly. I like the dancing type of workouts. That's fun for me.
LOL, the striptease is supposed to make you feel all sexy, all I ever feel is sore and sweaty. LOL! It's fun though. For a women it's kinda nice to work on the curves.
edited to add: Have you ever tried kettle bells? I love them. My son turned me on to them.

Belly dancing is another tough workout. Looks easy, but it isn't.

(20,043 posts)I bought dvds with a bunch of different exercises. I love the workouts. It's a total body work out. It looks easy but it's not. Kettlebells come in different weight sizes (5, 10, 20 lbs etc.) They've been around for a long time.

(25,501 posts)I'm usually walking in the winter, but it's time for me to start back at the gym when it gets hot around here.
I'm even a member of a 24 hour gym.

(4,243 posts)Primarily I'm a runner. Funny thing is anyone who knows me knows that if I'm not taking care of my mom or at home I'm out running. Most of my family members know my running route, so if they need me and I'm not at my mom's house or at home they just drive my route til they find me.
Over the last 6 months or so I've tried to mix it up with some ab work (sit ups, planks, leg lifts) just to keep from getting flabby. I'm going to be doing my first 10K of the year in a month or so and I'm hoping I'll be able to post some video.

(20,043 posts)when she's stressed that's the first thing she wants to do. She does other things but running is her favorite. She's done a 5k before, I think she'd like to try a 10k.
She's training her dogs to run with her.
I'd love to run, eventually maybe I will.
I have a bike I ride when the weather is nice.
Good luck on your 10k, I look forward to seeing some of the video!

After a few weeks of various exercises with ever-increasing numbers of reps, I stop and consider whether or not I want to put any potatoes in the sacks. Then, after dissolving into paroxysms of laughter, I'm so exhausted that I'm ready to take a couple of months vacation from my exercise routine.

(10,103 posts)Hi,
I commute to work by bike most every day and log a lot of miles on the weekends. Not sure how much of a workout it is since I ride at a snail's pace.
Peace

(10,039 posts)As close to a cardio workout that yoga can get to. Push-ups and crunches... Then things that are much harder than push-ups and crunches.
In the summer I plan to try learning how to ride a unicycle and maybe jog around a bit.

(16,967 posts)so I went with the mix it up category and plan to expand the mix up even more. Like you, I've been getting a little bored with the machines, and I don't want that to diminish my motivation. I've also read and have noticed that you can develop a muscle memory with the machines, and since your body tries to be efficient, your muscles adapt to the stress so they don't have to work as hard so it's good to mix things up and/or keep increasing your efforts to push past that.
Now I'm on the StairMaster for about 20 minutes (eek). I had to build up to that because it's a pretty tough workout. Most of the hardcore people at the gym go right for the StairMaster among their other routines. After the StairMaster I usually walk between 1 to 2 miles on the treadmill or go on the elliptical for a mile or two. Edit: for about 4 months, I focused mainly on the elliptical and that's where I thought I was noticing a plateau because my body was too adapted to that so I knew it was time to mix it up.
I started out just on the treadmill walking, but my shoes where bad and I started getting kind of shin splints and high ankle pain, so I finally had to break down and get some really good shoes (I know...duh). That all cleared up after I got some good Nikes, which I always resisted because I didn't want to give into the logo worship, but dang, they're good shoes and have saved me.
Soon I plan on going to the classes they have to mix it up even more. Usually I go every day, but I know that's not realistic in the long run. I'm just on a tear right now and for the last few months. Another edit: soon I'm going to start on the weights but have been concentrating on cardio to burn fat and have avoided the weights because of the extra protein you're supposed to take in. On the weights is when I'll just go 3 to 4 times/week.
