Cost...
Then there's all the junk (cartridges, aerosol cans) destined for the landfill.
An adjustable safety razor is all you need...
It's not rocket science.

(27,677 posts)but I also really like Feather:
It's mostly about properly preparing the beard, getting the angle right and using the proper pressure, i.e. not much.

(25,771 posts)For 17.6¢ per blade, I will forgo having to sharpen and strop a straight razor.

(10,109 posts)Hi,
Any brand of razor that you recommend? I tried a straight edge once, it was okay, but this looks much nicer and I wouldn't have to toss away so many of the cheap disposable ones I use for like a month each anymore.

(27,677 posts)but for $1.76 for ten Wilkinsons, it's just not worth it to special order anything else.

(15 posts)Love my Merkur with Feather blades, though I imagine my razor+blades+brush+soap isn't any cheaper than the disposable ones.
pokerfan
(27,677 posts)Ten blades for $1.76, soap lasts for months. The setup cost is probably more than disposables but in the long run, safety razor can't be beat.

(36,827 posts)I've known guys that could smear cream on their face and let the cat lick off their beard while other guys practically need industrial machinery to get theirs off. Some guys have thick skin and some don't. There's no one shaving implement that is right for everyone.
If you really want to go cheap and get the ultimate manly man shave, go buy a straight razor. You can get a good one for a little north of a C note, but you'll make it up by never having to buy razors again.
I've used a straight razor, a safety razor, and just about every other shaving instrument known to man. Now I use a Gillette 5 blade because it simply works the best for me. I get the blades on eBay for about $2 each and they last a month which puts my yearly cost at about $25 per year. That's cheap enough for me.

(38,613 posts)I've been thinking for a while about switching to the safety razor. I remember seeing one in my grandmother's home when I was a kid, and I think of it often.

(27,677 posts)I was just responding to the implication that safety razors are inherently dangerous and/or difficult to use. Use whatever works for your face.

(36,827 posts)A safety razor is a safety razor, all of them can turn your face to hamburger if you try hard enough.

(55,476 posts)I use a safety razor - a slant one at that (I have some thick hair) and shaving soap.
Nothing like the ritual of lathering up a cup of shaving foam!

Put away that overpriced Terminator of a twin blade razor. This Jolly Good Safety Razor from Edwin Jagger of England gives a shave second only in closeness and smoothness to a barbers straight (aka cut throat) razor, using frugally priced single blades. The exclusive two-part head is solid metal, triple electroplated with copper, nickel and chrome for a mirror finish. The handle is built of hard-wearing imitation ivory and chrome components to withstand extreme temperatures of water and soap. 3 3/4" long. Razor blades not included. Made in England.

(10,418 posts)One of those yellow Bic single blade disposables lasts me a couple of months. One of my grandpas shaved with a razor like that, though.
