At night I leave my outside lights on along with a light in the kitchen and lights on the stairs. When I get up in the middle of the night I look outside it is so dark. No one else leaves the lights on, so it seems. Do you leave your lights on or turn off all the lights every night?
just wondering

(20,234 posts)I love being able to sit outside at night just under the stars - it's not the same sitting under the neighbor's porch lights.

I live in the bush in Northern Ontario - them lights sure do attract the bugs!
All my lights are cfls - so cost is not the issue.
I've heard different reasonings for leaving outside lights on/off.
Some say it deters people from sneaking around, some say "why leave the lights on so they can see where they are going?"
And at bedtime - I just leave enough light on to navigate too the loo.

(1,437 posts)the only light on in the house is a nightlight in the bathroom so I don't piss on my feet. I suppose I could just sit down.. but meh..

(18,339 posts)starting about 1980 when we would leave the front door unlocked because we never knew who would be here the next day. Our friends knew they could come here and have a place to stay there was always pillows and blankets left on the couches. Later on I left the other lights on when I was alone and for some reason it made me feel "safe".

(24,146 posts)i spend a lot of time on the patio and prefer to be in the dark. all inside lights are off at night, but we leave the light over the kitchen sink on during the day so we're not coming home in the dark.

(21,020 posts)lights scattered around inside the house and motion activated lights around the outside of the house.
Plus another motion light on the barn.
And motion detector alarms in the driveway and yard that connect to a recording device.
All this prompted by the unexpected visit by a black bear at the bird feeder the first year we moved in.
Here he is, shaking down 50 lbs of bird seed on top of himself
