Aaaaand now I've booked my camping trip :D

5 nights at Lightning lake camping ground. Starting August 18 Here's what lightning lake looks like:

It was quite difficult to find a 5 day/night slot of unreserved days anywhere in southern BC. Lightning Lake is in Manning park which is about a 5 hour drive from here. I've been there before with my parents and we had a good time. Looking forward to this trip by myself! Now I just need to plan it out some more, plan the trails I want to hike, perhaps see if I can rent a canoe, see what books (probably Walden Pond for the fun of it) and gear I should bring.

This is NOT the type of roughing it back country camping that would REALLY be an escape from it / meditative experience. That would indeed be wonderful. No this is your typical rent a gravel pad, park your car, and set up your tent next to the fire pit. There's 140+ sights in this lot so you have neighbours However the scenery is still beautiful and it IS still camping. And for me since I've done nothing like this before by myself it's probably good to start small.

Well, now, that just looks beautiful!

I think you will have a great time...I love how the grass comes down to the water's edge.

Starting small is a great idea, and you will build on that.

Have fun!

Pro tip: don't do too much planning. Be prepared, but don't be a slave to a schedule.

And I just bought my first canoe a few weeks ago - $300

There is a river one mile away from my new home - I have canoed many times in the past, but were always rented or borrowed

NOW I OWN ONE!

Definitely do the canoe thing, rent or buy - ya don't want to be sitting in your campsite all day with a lake like that nearby.

And cameras - take cameras! - We want to see pictures on your return, please?

You can buy those throwaway cameras that will take pictures underwater for around ten bucks - yep - I mean literally put the camera underwater to take pics.

If'n ya took an extra tent, ya could probably canoe around, find a private spot or two, and "sleep around" while you are there!

Anyhow . .

Good find!

Enjoy

... to go backcountry camping without quite a few incremental steps.
.
.
Neighbors can be inconsiderate, sometimes. During the day, figure out
somewhere easy to get to (and, more importantly, get back from -- not
very far at all) and go there if there's loud music, drunks, etc... bothering
you... so you can get away until they're tolerable again.
.
Most campgrounds have quiet curfews. Don't be afraid to note the campsite
and complain to management to get it stopped. Those people are assholes.
.
I went camping once and made an oath to wake up every day to a frozen
strawberry daiquiri. Nearby campers would come over to complain about
the noise of my blender crushing ice at 7 AM. I would apologize and offer
them a daiquiri.
.
By the end of the week, I had quite a few campers coming over at 7 AM...
not to complain. but to partake. FUN!!!
.
It's the only thing I drank all day -- but I had to have that ONE. Really
nice way to start the day.

.
Enjoy yourself. I envy you.

The pictures you posted look gorgeous! If I didn't live so far away I'd pack my bags and head there with my husband. I know it is exactly the kind of place he and I would love.

We have camped (in a camper) quite a few times since 2005 and found that the people we meet in campgrounds are almost always friendly and helpful. If you have a problem or need help figuring something out, they will almost, without fail, offer to assist. You will find that often you'll get friendly waves and nods even as you pull into your space. Camping folk, from what we have observed, are a congenial and friendly group. Not to say you won't encounter a sour puss somewhere along the way, but by and large, they are friendly and cordial.

There are many, many sites on line to give you some ideas about cooking your meals and other hints for making your camping trip a success. Just Google what you want to know. Pinterest is another place to find tons of information about cooking outdoors and other information.

If I had one piece of advice to offer you on camping: Be prepared to be flexible. You will forget something you need and will have to "make do". Things will break or not work right. You have to just go with the flow and figure it out. For me that is half the fun. The first time you do some things (like put up your tent!) you may feel awkward and self-conscious. Don't let that bother you. Everyone there had a first time and they know you may be nervous. You will get more proficient with your camping skills and every time you go you'll learn something new about camping AND YOURSELF.

Spread your wings and fly! This is going to be the start of what could be many more adventures that will enhance your life and bring you joy!
