Ok...what's white, flies onto trees, and then crawls around the trunk (at night)?

No joke...just saw it twice. My first thoughts were bats, but I'm in the midwest. Bats aren't supposed to be white around here. Was about the size of one though.

Never saw anything like it before...and I'm not exactly young. Any ideas?

My first thought, it being nighttime, is a BIG moth of some kind. MiddleFingerMom Jul 2013 #1

My second thought is a cicada -- they can be pretty big and always seemed
kinda like doofuses to me... sometimes flying headlong into treetrunks and
stunning themselves into dropping to the ground, where they seemed to
crawl around stunned until they recovered. They're dark brown/black, but for
the first hour or two of their adult stage they ARE white.
.
MY bet is moth.

Or what MFM said a moth or some insect would be my other guess.
