And by "civilization" what I mean is, how far away are you from a Starbucks?
Me, I'm about a 20 minute drive from two locations in either location.

(68,644 posts)It would be a 5 minute drive.
Of course I'd rather go to the indy place nearby for coffee!

(17,086 posts)But I have several independent coffee shops within walking distance of my place here in town.

(10,237 posts)The closest Indy coffee place is now about 11 miles away or a 45 minute drive in L.A. time .On the other hand there are 14 Starbucks within a 5 mile radius of here ,they have them inside grocery stores ,the one corporate book store and rumor has it that if you can get the key for the bathroom at a Starbucks there is a Starbucks inside the bathroom .
How many Subways do we have ? 12 gazillion but they don't have WiFi .

(16,245 posts)There's no civilization here, to judge by the state assembly and governor. I moved here from Texas. It turned crazy just as soon as I got here, so I might be to blame.
Sorry.

(72,378 posts)store, pharmacy, larger grocery store, but you could not do all of your shopping in town as clothing options are next to nil.
We have a wee grocery in our town, B&Bs that are summer-only businesses. Ditto for the restaurants. (We do have a little college, which I think should count for civilization.)

(26,117 posts)There's probably one in the college town where I work, but I've never had occasion to look for one.
I can walk from home to a store that sells Fat Tire in 5 minutes, though, which is important.

(4,098 posts)We must love coffee here in my smallish (18,000) town!
HeiressofBickworth
(2,682 posts)I could walk there in no time at all, but despite the proximity , I never go there. I'm a tea drinker and get my various kinds of tea from a little local tea and tea accessories shop about 4 miles from my house.
I had a lovely cup of tea at the movie theater this afternoon, now I need to find it so I can have some at home. It was a chai with cardamom. Very tasty.

But there's better coffee at .8 mi and excellent in my kitchen.

(21,925 posts)If I expand the radius to 10 miles it's eleven. The closest one is eight blocks away. I'm four blocks from a Walmart. Hey I live in a veritable ant hill of overpopulation in southern California.
I'd rather define civilization by how many jazz clubs or classical music concert halls are in the area. In that case it's zero.
krispos42
(49,445 posts)Which also puts me in the same area as a BoA, a Wells Fargo, a Chase Bank, an Old Navy, a Panera, a Duchess, a Moe's, a half-dozen-plus local restaurants, a Trader Joe's, and a Radio Shack.
Further up the street is the obligatory McDonald's, more local restaurants, a TD bank, a Shop Rite, a CVS...
I live in a crowded, affluent suburb that likes to pretend it's a quiet, affluent exurb. It's not.

(31,392 posts)We have Caribou Coffee much closer and even better than that a local place called Caffe Driade which is closet.
I have never been in this particular Starbucks on Franklin Street in town. I have been in the Caribou Coffee occasionally--which used to be a bank on a major intersection. Most often I go
to Caffe Driade which backs up to a walking trail and canyon.
