Are there any North Carolina residents here?

What is living your state like? How happy are you with the way things are run. I see there are a number of Republicans in charge there too, but I'm getting tired of some of the legal and political BS here in FL.

and a few issues I would rather not to get into. I remember vacationing there as a kid years ago and it seemed like a nice place.

being sued by Department of Justice. Refused money for a study of fracking, etc. This is just the beginning.

I live in Asheville, but we recently voted down gay marriage. Every state/city has its ups and downs.

The Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area is among the bluest of the state. Asheville is
also blue. The rest of the state? Mostly ugh, although the Charlotte area
is purplish.

The Repubs took over the state in the last election and have been wreaking havoc on
what was once a purple state. Opposition to the Repubs has grown via
protests that were organized by the NC NAACP and dubbed "Moral Mondays".
The US Justice Dept. has just announced--this week--that it will sue
the state over the restrictions that were passed in a Voter ID bill, along with
serious restrictions and cutbacks to early voting.

So, we have a lot of work to do--because the Repubs gerrymandered districts
after the 2010 election--to throw the bums out. It may take two election cycles,
but I think it may be possible.

Political climate aside, if you are in the IT, bioscience, or financial industries,
there are pretty good employment opportunities in the Triangle area. If you
are a teacher, the pay is crappy (thanks to the Repubs) and you won't get
any incentive pay for a Master's. The hit on public schools by this legislature
is something that has awakened a lot of formerly Republican teachers and energized
them politically. Beaches are gorgeous. Mountain areas are beautiful. Cost
of living is decent.

I do love Chapel Hill. Great university town. Smallish town atmosphere but with
many well educated, cosmopolitan folks. I have lived in NY, NJ, CA, MO, and NE
and can't imagine living anywhere else in the U.S.

You should come take a look!
