I'll start:
1) ARTISAN
2) VEGAN LEATHER

(4,299 posts)Artisan is a wonderful, descriptive word. How do hipsters use it?
I agree with number two, there is no such thing as vegan "leather" and most are horrible anti-eco substitutes.
Disclaimer: I'm an old hippie that doesn't know what a hipster is and I confess to veganism.
Thank you.

(20,176 posts)alternately, anything grown with ineffective archaic farming methods from heirloom seeds...
like these tomatoes.
It's a lovely word.
Vegan leather is plastic. It'd be nice if there was a durable natural leather-like fiber...but there isn't. Canvas comes closest...and you can't make workplace or business appropriate dress shoes from canvas.
antiquie
(4,299 posts)that doesn't make them artisan, and I'm an organic gardener thanks to modern techniques.
Thanks for enlightening me.
One more, do they call themselves hipsters?
People I know didn't apply hippies to ourselves until decades. after the sixties.

(38,002 posts)Hipsters (and frankly, all marketers) use the Artisan/Artisinal for everything. Artisinal beer. Artisinal socks. Artisan spatulas.
As for the term "vegan leather", that's the one that set me off. From what I can glean, while it's not PVC, it's supposed to be microfiber. I mean, come on. If it were maybe pressurized, pebble-embossed wool felt from cruelty-free sheep, I might be okay with it, but microfiber? Gah!
Here's a site that kind of sums up what I think about hipster-marketing bullshit:

It's a Hipster Company Name Generator. Just keep refreshing. Everything that's wrong with the world is there.

(20,176 posts)Give me one, just one, synonym for hashtag. You can't because there isn't one.

(11,795 posts)I mean, that's what it is. WTF does hash tag even mean? I do not do twitter.
Chan790
(20,176 posts)For example, Relationship Science (a maker of business communication software) tweeted:
"What #govtshutdown means for #nonprofits? Leverage #relationships to balance tighter resources; via @NonProfitTimes"
clicking on any of the hashtags in that tweet (#govtshutdown #nonprofits #relationships) pulls up everything going back to the beginning of Twitter if you wanted to scroll back that far also hashtagged with that hashtag. Tags are meant to be used to identify keywords but there is a phenomena known as "twitterfucking" where people hashtag unrelated terms to create a history of linkage such as #belieber (fans of Justin Beiber) and #pedophile or @boehner and #DrunkOompaLoompa. As the system is designed to recognize flagged terms (@, #, hyperlinks) that are linked frequently as related...the system now considers #drunkOompaLoompa to be a key term for the Speaker's twitter feed.
clicking on the @handle (@NonProfitTimes) brings up the twitter feed of that twitterer, an online magazine for NPO administrators.
The net result is that Twitter achieves a hyper-connected cross-referential platform of opinion on any topic and between divergent topics such as the government shutdown and NPOs. It also allows one to quickly research those linkages with a single click. It also creates a massive easily navigated opinion base where all voices are roughly equal.
--The tweet in this post actually came from my twitter feed.

(20,277 posts)I would burn it up merely for the annoyance factor. Some people can't have a conversation without throwing in some stupid "Oh, hashtag _____!" remark.

(20,176 posts)It's in the same vein as "number sign".
The symbol is a number sign or octothorpe, but neither is interchangeable with hashtag.

(3,065 posts)that said it was also called an octothorp. And the asterisk is called a sextile. I checked Wiki and it's true.

That's a funny one, I have never heard of it. That is rather obnoxious imho.

(20,176 posts)They're two entirely different arts with not-terribly-overlapping skill-sets.
Most people who do dessert pastry do not do savories...pastry as used in appetizers and entrees such as Wellingtons and pot-pies. The title for either position is "Patissier" though both typically have additional assigned roles in a small-to-medium kitchen...dessert pastry chefs generally do all the desserts. Savory pastry chefs are typically also "Entremetier": responsible for vegetables, starches and egg dishes.
Pie makers, cake/cupcake bakers, pizzaolo, and so on...all specific jobs with titles.
The chef side is just as divided in a large kitchen as to titles and roles.
