DU Album of the Day: "Low Budget" The Kinks

No, it's not your imagination. Yes, every song on this album sounds like another song. But for all that, all the big, dumb hooks, and the sometimes too-clever lyrics, this is the album that put The Kinks back on the map. This is the album we put on for some quick energy, and a few decades later we might have called it 5 Hour Energy in a disc.

The songs seem to stand apart, each in its own space, but they also meld together, painting a picture of a lonely struggle against long odds, victories coming from time to time, but defeat never far away. The ultimate outcome is in doubt, though, and perhaps we will one day fly like Superman.

One of my favorite concerts was seeing them in the early 80's on their State of Confusion tour - of course they sang all their old hits but I liked quite a few songs from that album too so it was a great show.
