(4,833 posts)I was living in Europe, being a Cold Warrior during the Cold War. At the time I felt very old, like Methuselah, but in a younger body. And, while it had its moments, on the whole I hated it.
Now I just feel like Methuselah, without the younger body. But I am loving life. Most of the time. When I can forget.
So, the answer to your question is -- a hell of a lot older than I feel today.

(4,056 posts)As I recall there was a lot of doublespeak and "War with East Asia" type propaganda--albeit not as blatant as Chimpy's regime 17 years later. So Orwell predicted Dystopia--but it ended up being even worse than he imagined!

I got a metal dumptruck for my birthday. I hit my brother in the head with it and yelled "Tonka!" For his birthday, He got a toy rifle, I emulated something I saw in a Rambo (or some-such) movie and butt-whipped him with it, knocking his several of his brand-new teeth down his throat.
Neither one of us got anything but Legos and Nerf for our birthdays until I was 9.
1984: great book, not such a good year for me.

It's all relative.

One of my coworkers said he would have been 16 days old the day she started with the company.
Then he quite wisely scurried out of the room.
