'Culture' question. Young men wearing stocking caps?

Miz t. and I were having breakfast at an IHOP this morning.
(OK I know...'culinary police', but the omelet was pretty damn good.)
There was a young man (20s?) sitting nearby with his girl/wife/sister/whatever.
I'm pretty sure she was female.

He was wearing a knit watch/stocking cap rolled all the way down, covering his ears and eyebrows.
He had a pair of sunglasses hiked up on top.
It WAS chilly outside.
(Coastal Alabama)

But I've seen young men wearing this headgear in 90 degrees down here.
So what's the deal?
I know The Loungers will have the answer.

they always say their heads are cold. We always make them take them off at dinner.

I think it's a young guy thing.

Keeps sweat out of your eyes….?
Moderates the temperature (Wool is good for heating and cooling ) and prevents heat stroke….?
Latest fad…? Thinks it looks 'Cool'….?
bad hair cut…? Preventing sun burn on a bald head..?
Any number of reasons, it will soon be something else.

Even middle school girls in the suburbs have the Yankees (in the German flecktarn camo pattern), 1976 Montreal Expos and the 1965 Kansas City Monarchs in their closet these days....
