on Monday morning the 2nd I took one of the kids to a doctor's appointment and on the way we saw the final stages of a nasty car wreck getting cleaned up. there was a passenger car off the interstate that looked like it had flipped or rolled and was pretty smashed up. comment to the kid - "somebody died"
later that day after we got home I received a phone call. a man was at the end of our old road and got the number from our sign. he was asking permission to enter and to look for two missing dogs. his son had been in an accident that morning...
the son made it but was in critical condition and the dogs had run off, most likely. I said OF COURSE and that we would keep an eye out and even go look ourselves. I also suggested he go up to the Post Office and put a note on the bulletin board as they might run or wander for miles.
we looked, took our dogs up that way for several days thinking they might attract the lost dogs. but really figured they would end up at the guest ranch that was the closest to where the wreck was.
pretty much forgot about it after a few days, then yesterday the man called again. I was feeling guilty that we had forgotten and had no luck, was preparing the conversation when he said the boxer was found two days after the crash by the highway patrol and that the little chihuahua had just gotten out of surgery and was going to make it. she had apparently laid by the side of the road for a week.
what happened was somebody on foot (homeless, hitchhiker, local nutty pedestrian guy?) had seen the little dog and gave it some water, then walked to the caretaker's house at the Amerind Museum a few miles up the road and told him about the dog. Well the caretaker had seen the note in the Post Office and he immediately went to get the number and called the father. He came out and they went to find the dog. He said he parked on the shoulder of the highway and went to go look in the bushes and almost stepped on her. she was right there near the pavement! she had a couple broken legs and her pelvis was fractured, (plus dehydration) but they took her to Tucson (I guess) and she went through surgery and will probably be OK.
what a tough little dog. there were some pretty cold nights last week and it even snowed/rained once (though it didn't stick). OMG a little miracle dog! tears of happiness ==>>

I just love a story with a happy ending.
Thanks for sharing that one, Kali.

poor little pooch! The highway patrol found the boxer alive, right?
When I was a kid in the early '60s, before seat belts, an older cousin of a friend died by herself in a rollover accident on a little island road. They determined that she may have swerved to avoid hitting a rabbit, which were prolific on the island. So sad.

(55,014 posts)and I think all will be OK eventually. yeah I think a lot of accidents happen when people swerve for small animals. you don't want to hit them, but your life for a rabbit is not an exchange I want to make.
