Cucking Stool

A cucking stool was used to punish scolds and unquiet women. It is comprised of a chair fixed at the end of a pole where the transgressor would be tied and submerged into a muddy pond.

"Some gentlemen traveling and coming near a town saw an old woman spinning near a cucking stool. One, to make the company merry, asked the good woman what the chair was made for. She said, 'You know what it is.'
'Indeed,' he said 'not I, unless it be the chair you use to spin in.'
'No, no,' said the good woman, 'you know it to be otherwise. Have you not heard that it is the cradle your good mother hath often layn in?'"
