The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumswe've journeyed into the modern age of cell phones thanks to no cigs
husband has become increasingly irritated with t-mobile and in need of a phone with mapping capability for work, so i spent an hour on the phone with sprint getting a new account. i went with them since my dad gets a corporate discount through work. our bill will go up about 50 bucks a month, but that's for much better plan. we also got 900 bucks worth of samsung phones for free and 200 for moving our existing numbers over. it's not something that i was hot on, but it got to the point where it seemed unavoidable.
ordinarily i'd be stressed about the additional cost, but that will be covered by our not smoking any more. one calendar month later and i'm still going strong but the husband is still going off and on with the cigs. although i've been mildly tempted, i have no interest in, or intention of, going back.

(38,613 posts)The health benefits of quitting are not as obvious and they improve more gradually, but it's easy to think "30 days equals $210 bucks!"
I've been on the gum though, and weaning myself off that.

(24,146 posts)and have gum as a backup. i haven't thought about stepping down on the nicotine in the vaping liquid yet, but that will come with time.
good work on your no smoking journey

(24,146 posts)he's quit before but said it was too hard to stay quit with me still smoking. we just need to figure out what's different this time.
Skittles
(153,169 posts)with me (as with countless others) it took multiple attempts - what your husband needs to work on if his triggers - if he has tried to quit several times, he should be well aware by now what exactly sets him off
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)he won't even talk to me about what's different this time, but that frustration is my problem.
Skittles
(153,169 posts)you're doing fantastic, and perhaps that will influence him in the long run

(7,720 posts)how much does a pack of cigarettes cost where you live? I'm in Minnesota, and last year the state tax was raised by $1.60 a pack. A pack of cigarettes cost about $7.50 in Minnesota. There are a lot of people in NW MN buying cigarettes in North Dakota because they cost about $5.
I recently discovered that a pack of cigarettes cost $14 in NYC. i am sure here is a large black market for cheaper cigarettes from Kentucky where a pack costs less than $5.
I quit cold turkey on December 5, 2005. I also quit drinking for three months to make it easier to stay off the cigarettes.
To show how stupid I am, or how difficult it is to quit smoking, I quit smoking twice for six months, and once for two years, and each time I started smoking again.
I have not had a cigarette since December 2005. Yesterday, I walked by a group of men smoking outside a cafe and found the odor offensive and it seemed to cling to my clothing.
All of that being said, if a meteor were plunging towards the Earth with the immenent demise of all humanity, I'd buy a carton of Winston 100s (my preferred brand) and smoke all of 'em.
Edit: I should add I only smoked the full flavor red box and when I quit they cost less than $4/pack and I was only smoking a half pack per day.
My father quit his 3-pack a day habit in 1974. My morher quit smoking her 1/2 pack (or less) a day habit in 1990. My father did not notice she quit for a week. He was at work, she was at home, and she left an open pack of cigarettes on the counter for three months. Man, was she tough.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)but we were getting cartons of camels for $43 at 7-11. we'd get 18 bucks off for buying in bulk.
husband said he got a pack the other day for four bucks in the next county over.

(7,720 posts)but the health complications can be many, and unexpected. Three years ago I was diagnosed with 'non-age related cataracts'. That means a clouding of the lens inside the eye. One of the causes is smoking.
In my case however, it was likely caused by being a premature baby, also likely caused by my mother smoking during her pregnancy.
I was born two months premature with underdeveloped lungs.
I was first prescribed eye glasses when I was 5 years old. I was told by an eye doctor that I amm not a candidate for laser eye surgery. I guess I will still use my twenty year old hard contact lenses.
