(2,977 posts)We'd have more in a heartbeat if not for one of our dogs who likes to play with them to death. She's too good of a guard dog, so for now it's her instead of chickens.

(6,719 posts)and was surprised when one of the hens came and asked to be petted. Pretty soon all of them were there wanting to be petter. Who knew. I was happy to pet them. Just very very surprised.
This little boy and chicken are too cute. Gentle hugs to both of them.

(39,909 posts)It was a clinical decision for a source of healthy food,
but we quickly fell in love with our birds.
They are an unending source of amazement and entertainment.
We have found them to be very Social, each with an individualized personality,
and accompanying grief when we lose one.
We still have one old hen that has been with us since the original flock in 2007.
That is long lived for a chicken.

A bushel and a PECK

And a hug around the neck . . .
A hug around the neck
And a barrel and a heap,

And I'm talking in my sleep
About you . . . about you . . ."

(2,529 posts)We raised chickens and it was hard to figure which flock he belonged to. All the chickens would run him off. We made him a pet and he grew into the meanest rooster you ever saw. He'd guard our front yard and attack anyone he saw walking on the street in front of our house. People on the block knew his reputation and would slow down and watch him warily as they went by. He'd peck busily on the grass and once they thought they were in the clear, he'd rear his head, flap his wings and tear off after them, pecking away at their heels. We didn't get much traffic from Jehovah's Witnesses while we had him.
