Bitter, sweet kitten rescue for firefighters
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Several kittens were rescued in September 2013 when City Fire, Battalion 3 and Engine 12 responded to an RV fire.
Once the fire was put out, fire crews heard sounds coming from the outside of the RV. After they conducted a search, they found several kittens alive under a hot tub, as well as a dog and a cat that did not survive the blaze.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue said it appeared the mother cat had moved the kittens, who appeared to be approximately 4-weeks-old, to the tub during the fire.
Crews tried unsuccessfully to find a home for the kittens, so two firefighters, Chief McGee and Engineer Robey decided they would keep them.
"Truth be told, once Chief McGee texted a picture of one of the kittens to his wife and daughters the decision was made."
The kittens were able to make a full recovery after their new families tended to some minor burns and continued to bottle feed the kittens.
