DON'T call me "Mama." Don't EVER call me that!

After we saw "A Fish Called Wanda," my wife told me (in English, which we normally do NOT speak at home), never to call her by the same name our children did. So, I didn't.

We were going through some olf papers to clean up the place, and came across this old photo of my wife and our elder daughter, around 1990. Our daughter would have been 7 and my wife 38. Our daughter looks pretty much her age here. My wife, as usual, looks about 20 years younger than hers.

I still don't call her Mama.

My husband and I use each other's names. The kids called us "Mom" and "Dad", and if we were talking to them about the other parent, we would say, "your mother" or "your father".

(Hmmm, maybe they haven't invaded Europe, so perhaps you don't know who they are. If so, consider yourself lucky.)

I haven't a clue who they are. I have to run over to NL in a few minutes, but I'll look them up when I get back.

I am sure they still are gorgeous. I seem to recall that you have been living in Germany for many years? As an American (if in fact you are) how did you happen to live in Germany all these years?

As were my parents and grandparents.

I requested a posting in Germany due to the fact that my wife did not want to move, and I did want to not lose her. It was a LOT of globetrotting/commuting for decades, and I didn't move my residence here until late 2011.

Luckily, my top brass was OK with that. Seems they didn't have anyone else who spoke German, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian and Swedish to fill the post anyway.

And yes, my wife and daughters are still gorgeous. Not that I'm partial, or anything. This is from last month, with my wife (now 62) on the left, and the daughter in the old photo (now 31) in the middle:

Mama is really a word reserved for mothers or a slang word. I hope you're well, friend.

I am, frankly, exhausted. This each-day-a-new-country routine is only not tiring if you're a character in a film, or 18 years old again (I'm not). But tomorrow is a holiday in Germany, and this time, I'm pretending to notice.
