A warm lazy summer day that wasn't too hot or too humid, just relaxing in the shade of a tree and smelling the sweet fragrance of gardenias. That day is forever attached attached to that smell. It is a happy place for me.

The only competition for it in my mind, was wandering through the woods and coming across a stream with mossy banks and wild rhododendrons in full bloom overhanging the banks. I think I sat there for an hour because it was such a perfect spot.

We can only differentiate between a handful of tastes, but we can differentiate hundreds of smells even when they exist in very small volume and are shrouded by more powerful smells. Scent can also be a very powerful memory trigger. Even when going years without sensing a particular smell we can still recognize it.
