Your responses date you as being too old for the Johnny Depp/Hugh Jackman/that Twilight vampire crowd... but too young to appreciate the real sexiest men of the theater (Bogart/Grant/Redford/Newman/etc)
On edit - Ack! Olivier...Peck...Gable... Heston... Too many! I'd include Jimmy Stewart too, but then again, my "what makes a man sexy" meter has never worked like those that were oriented toward the male half of the species.

(27,172 posts)OK, here are my picks in rough chronological order of when I got the hots for them (and this is not an inclusive list, my list of celebrity crushes, particularly if they included musicians, would be very cumbersome indeed!).
Jack Lord (as Steve McGarrett)
Werner Klemperer (as Col. Klink - yes, I know I have strange tastes)
Pierce Brosnan
Harrison Ford
Jeremy Brett (as Sherlock Holmes)
Chow Yun-Fat
Jude Law
Ving Rhames
Colin Firth
Jonny Lee Miller
Martin Freeman (fell in love with him in the British "The Office"
Benedict Cumberbatch (yeah, I'm a Cumberbitch, and proud of it, too!)

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This post is incredibly rude to the male posters of DU. This is supposed to be a welcoming site, if you aren't sure read the SOP for the lounge it says: "Our social forum. Relax with your friends and talk about off-topic stuff. The Lounge is supposed to be a friendly, welcoming place for everyone. No cliquish behavior. No drama. No political arguments. No whining about DU." all this post does is create an unfair sexist division between us, I get that this is the Lounge but be fair if someone posted a sexist women thread it would be hidden as flamebait as it should, and so should this. Please vote to hide this post.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Jul 10, 2014, 06:02 PM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Who's the homely dude that alerted on this.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I don't know where to start, but suspect this alert has tongue planted firmly in cheek while thinking about other hottie threads.
But, whatever-- alerter get a life.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Sorry, but I look like a cross between the 3
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(34,137 posts)He may not have the most gorgeous body, but he's sexy because he is considerate, sweet, shares my interests, and is great in bed. He also is one of the most liberal people I know and may be a stronger feminist than I am.
I find those traits to be sexier than any ripped body!

(34,137 posts)And no matter how attractive a body might be, if the mind inside is not intelligent and considerate, I don't find them attractive at all. So many movie stars that look nice have turned me totally off when I find out about their politics or their attitudes towards women and other people.
Robert Reich!
John Fugelsang (too bad he's far, far too young for me)
Barack Obama (still too young)
Somebody mentioned David McCallum (He was my first crush on a man who didn't have a horse Before Illya Kuryakin it was Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Without their horses, they were dead to me, though.)
Manifestor_of_Light
(21,046 posts)Brains and intelligent conversation are a must. Your average sports-watching beer drinker, I would have nothing to talk about with them.
My mom told me that a lot of women were catty and jealous, and my best friends in life would be men. Friends to hang with, not just
romantic relationships. She was right. When I was a kid at adult parties, and the men would talk in a group separated from the women, and I would go listen to the men because their conversation was more interesting.
I have had a few long term women friends over the decades. And a lot of women think you can steal a man like you can steal a horse, like they can be led around. This is demeaning to men.
Coventina
(27,172 posts)I fell in love with him in "Sense & Sensibility."

(21,046 posts)Brian May, Rock Star/Ph.D. in Astrophysics.(saw him play last night in Houston, with Adam Lambert singing). He said on his blog today he felt "unworthy" and that his Houston performance was not his best. My God he must be a perfectionist! He always knows his chords, his scales, his ornaments. He uses delay and other effects but it doesn't degenerate into "deedley-deedlee-dee" as Frank Zappa would say. He is still harmonically rooted while he's noodling. I think he learned that from Hendrix.
Lewis Black.
George Clooney.
Old timers that are gone: My first crush as a kid was Gardner McKay of Adventures in Paradise, a tv show based on Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific". Paul Newman. Laurence Olivier. Ronald Colman. Leslie Howard.
And I love my husband. He's kind and sweet and gentle and loves math. He knows how to FIX THINGS!!
Coventina

(21,046 posts)He was a good actor, but his role in Gone With The Wind was really wimpy as Ashley.
I'd recommend Of Human Bondage and The Petrified Forest if you haven't seen them.
Trivia: Humphrey Bogart and Leslie Howard were such good friends after they made The Petrified Forest (Bogart robs everyone at a roadside cafe in the desert) that Humphrey named his daughter Leslie Howard Bogart.
Coventina
(27,172 posts)So I never felt any interest in the movie.
Thanks for the two recs, I haven't seen those so I'll search those out.
I fell in love with him in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and also loved "Pygmalion".
I know I've seen him in a few other things, but can't think of them right now.
Neat trivia!!!
Never knew he and Bogart were friends, seem like very different people, but that's so cool!

I remember people making a stink about that cheerleader who liked to hunt endangered african animals. There were those (not here at DU) who thought she was a hottie. I hardly find anyone who would put their own ego ahead of an endangered species as a 'hottie'. To me that girl radiated ugliness inside and out.
