(31,519 posts)Cats are smarter than many people think. They don't generally learn "tricks" for your entertainment, but they are perfectly capable of learning skills that suit them.

(31,395 posts)and that cat learned how to stand on the top step, stand up, and turn the door handle to let himself and
his brother, Simba, out!
First time I found them roaming the house in the am I thought I'd forgotten to close the door. After it happened
several times we finally figured out what happened by putting them down there and waiting for Mouse to come
open the door!
Mouse kitty hanging out with Tanya. All three of them have now crossed the Bridge.

(54,256 posts)Later in life he developed diabetes.
He learned that he couldn't eat breakfast until I'd given him his insulin shot.
If I slept late he'd hop on my chest and paw my face until I got up and gave him the injection and then fed him.
Ace was also a hell of a hunter.
Squirrels.
He would proudly bring me a dead squirrel.
Almost as big as he was.
Not to worry, we were over run with the tree rats.
What a cat.
Still miss him.

(24,007 posts)...pull down the lever/handle on the Hinckley-Schmidt water tank to get himself a drink. Another uses a single claw to pull keys of my keyboard, and she can also pull open the ports to the central vac system, and even plays fetch.

(16,296 posts)who is training whom? I can see the cat thinking, "took him long enough, almost starved".

(14,549 posts)It worked so well that I still use it with my current dogs. Dogs and cats are extremely good at reading body language.
Humans can hear in the womb but dogs don't develop good hearing until about 15 days after birth. Humans hierarchy is hearing then vision then scent -- dogs are the exact opposite. By communicating through visual means we are meeting them half way. The cat doing the signs is a new one though! Thanks for sharing!

(22,695 posts)Beautiful to see. If only humans were this patient with one another when communicating.
Cats are very smart. I had one that I toilet trained and another that could say "I love you" and "Hello."
No, she did not flush.

(9,742 posts)He doesn't have speech in his life, but he commicates to me all the time.
He brings his food bowl and drops it on my feet when hungry.
I ask him where's your bowl, he'll go and get it.
Wanna Go for a walk. Grabs his leash.
Com'on lets go to bed, he says. Sits in the hallway at the precise time with a favorite toy.
Cats are just behind on the evolutionary scale. Very sorry.
