clean, well-lighted, graffiti-free (there's even real art here and there). Except for the odd weird occurrence like this, without which it wouldn't be the NYC subway - you wouldn't recognize it today.

Try to explain that to a child.

When I was a kid casual nudity was no big deal. Blame it on my Scandinavian ancestors or 'sixties California. I'd seen great grandmas' breasts, a great aunt entirely uncovered, and plenty of people of all ages skinny dipping, including my parents.

But I'd never seen an inflated scrotum before.
