At the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery in southern Pennsylvania on November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. This 270-word speech is considered one of the greatest in American history, though it didn't receive much attention at the time. Equal Opportunity Day is observed at Gettysburg National Cemetery each year, where ceremonies commemorating Lincoln's address are held under the sponsorship of the Sons of Union Veterans and the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania. 19 November is a special day for the World Toilet Organization, for a few reasons. The World Toilet Organization was founded on 19 November 2001 and the inaugural World Toilet Summit was held on the same day in Singapore.
As it was the first global summit of its kind, it was decided that an international day to cherish and celebrate toilets was needed. With the aim to draw global attention to the sanitation crisis, World Toilet Day was established.
Its genesis was met with mixed reactions – amusement, ridicule, laughter and support – yet World Toilet Day continues to promote discourse and debate on toilets and sanitation. http://worldtoilet.org
