A stubborn conservative old man. He had a terrible childhood, he's damaged. Did he try to have a warm human relationship with his wife and children? No. He doesn't even know them. His whole life is work because he cannot connect with other people. Sad.

He was looking for reactions. The only ones he seemed to chat with were the Rice dealer and fish dealer. I did not see much warmth to his sons, to him they were his legacy and they were striving to be a perfectionist as he is. Striving for perfection, seems a selfish act, as well as an act where no one can get close to you. By doing so, they could knock you off of your "game".

He has often said he is always eager to get back to work, and hates holidays. It means spending time with people..family. I will not presume to get into his head, but he doesn't seem to have much in the way of fun in his life.

We have a saying here in the states, all work and no play makes ___(fill in the blank) a dull boy.

I would imagine that despite the high prices he charges, the reservations that are two months in advance, the money he makes, he probably never has fun with. Yes the awards are impressive, but to have no fun in your life, kills the spirit just a bit. Yes he loves what he is doing..but with love you have to have fun.

He hardly cracked a smile at all though the entire movie, except when going back to this high school reunion or meeting up with the Rice seller and Fish seller (who probably stroked his ego.)

He is to be admired for what he has done. He may even sell the best sushi in the world, but to think recreation is a waste of precious time..is sad.

There maybe sushi restaurants that serve their customers a lower quality product, but maybe those owners are warm and receptive to their customers and care more about enjoying his or her life with them. Joking, commenting about the weather, politics or what have you. The fact is they have a repertoire with them..and has fun with them, that is what is important.

It saddens me that his ways are dying out.
Loved learning how food was viewed in the culture.
Very moving doc.
