(11,916 posts)I swear she looked like a 500 lb woman walking on stilletto heels. Sooo funny!
My favorite kitty! She was 17 when she died. She came to me meowing one day for me to pick her up and hold her. I was on the computer, holding her like a baby and noticed her purring had stopped and her paws were getting cold. I held her for the longest time, then we wrapped her up in a cotton blanket and buried her along with her sister's ashes.

(28,394 posts)We always had dogs and cats, growing up. But what I really wanted was a horse!
I counted about 15 dogs and innumerable cats. Some of the dogs - Lady, Taffy, Max, Major, Brandy, Sparky.
Some of the cats: Smokey, Spooky (2), Black Kitty, Charley the Cat, etc. There were LOTS of cats over the years.

All of these guys were strays, or kittens born to feral cats, which we took home.

(4,833 posts)Minerva.
I don't really remember Midnight, my parents had him when I was really young. He was all black.
Tiger was a tabby we had when I was a kid.
Felix, TT (short for Tiny Tiger) and Tut (short for Tutankhamun), were actually strays who came into our house - we never "owned" them, but they were friendly animals. Felix was orange and white, TT was a tabby with some orange, and a very small cat, Tut was all black and looked very much like the cats in Egyptian paintings, hence the name.
Smokey was the cat I got when I was 12 and had for 15 years. He looked like a blue-point Balinese. Beautiful cat, but he was probably ill-treated as a kitten and had serious behavioral issues. He was still a great pet.
Minerva (or Minnie, for short) is our current cat, a 7-pounder who looks like a Russian blue with yellow-green eyes. She's a very sweet, affectionate cat, and I'm absolutely her cat servant for life

(9,902 posts)Benedictine Brandy aka Ben, my first pet as a kid, a big goofy Irish Setter. Truffles, then Snowball, both teddy bear hamsters. Sambo, our black kitty that we found in the basement of our house after moving in...then Elizabeth mama cat to Jack, Buffy, and Max...Elizabeth was preggers when we found her.
Good lord...I can't remember them all....Then I had two Oscars, I don't remember if I even named them...then two more cats...Zero aka Fat Bastard (big orange male) and Tia who was so tiny...6 lbs about. Allie, our Choco. All of these animals are long gone. We now have our 14 year old mix breed, Olivia, who is mostly black lab, and completely crazy, and our 10 year old male Maine Coon cats, brothers...Simon and Henry.

(1,412 posts)The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over
together.

Many were foster kittens who stayed for a while until they got placed into loving homes, or entrusted to women I loved when it was time for me to move on.....
...two dogs, the rest cats, except Suzy, who was a horribly misnamed white male rat who I got in the 3rd grade.

(12,132 posts)Aunt Helen and Ruby - named for my beloved Aunt Helen and her partner Ruby. This was in the mid 60s and I was maybe 4 or 5. Of course I didn't understand or even care about "adult relationships". All I knew is that I loved Aunt Helen and Ruby and thought it was perfectly fine, an honor even, to name my fish after them.
Then at some point not long after that we got Hildegard. Hildy for short - a red, short-haired, miniature dachshund who lived with us until after I graduated high school and left home. Dachsunds are still my favorite dog.
We also had a series of cats but the only one whose name I remember was Dallas as she was born in a box on the floor of the car as we crossed the city limits on our move to Dallas. Dallas was the only one of the litter we kept. I was maybe in 3rd grade by then.
Long about Jr High, Sam came to hang out with us. He was another dachshund and I'm not sure why he became ours - he was just there one day. But I wasn't complaining. Hildy loved the company and two dachshunds are better than one.
After graduation and leaving home to strike out on my own, my roommate and I had a cat named Whoopie Cat. Named so because of a misheard song lyric from Led Zeppelin's Misty Mountain Hop. Also Whoopie cat liked to get high. We didn't hold her down or anything abusive like that. We would often exhale our smoke out the window though and, since WC was an outdoor cat mostly, she would hop op on the window sill and stick her face in the outgoing stream. We never tried to find out if that had anything to do with her litters of 6 toed kittens.
Fast forward through years of having no pets to our now 16 year old cat Kiki (named by my daughter for a cat in a cartoon she liked) and our papillon Seras, also named by my daughter after an anime character.
She also has a 3 year old bearded dragon named Spitfyre who is about a foot and half long now.
I'm trying to talk my wife into letting me get a pair of Siamese kittens so they will sing that song. Unsuccessfully, so far...maybe after Kiki leaves us...

I forgot to mention that they're all rescues except for Petey. He's the only dog we bought. From a pet store no less. But we've learned since then that pet stores keeps puppy mills in business, so from here on in it's all rescues, all the time.

(6,799 posts)I actually forgot one. His name is Hart and he is a grey striped feral. When we trapped him and took him to the vet it was discovered that he had a heart murmur. The vet told us we could put him down or let him live out his natural life. We decided on the latter. Problem with ferals is that you can not give them medicine. Hart is still with us and thriving. As you probably guessed we have a feral cat problem in our neighborhood. Along with me, two other neighbors (cat lovers) also trap, spay and neuter our little colony. We have managed to keep the colony down to a manageable size but it is an ongoing process. I can tell you we feed them well and put vitamins in their food. I even had a cat patio built on the side of my house so that they have some privacy when they eat and I have some cat houses so they can escape the rain and cold, thankfully, rain and cold are not something we experience too often in Las Vegas. In Las Vegas we are able to register our cat colonies, which means animal control will not pick them up and we can feed them without breaking the law. Used to be that if you fed feral cats they were considered yours and were your responsibility. Thanks to the new law that is no longer the case.
