Under The Rug: Toupees Continue To Be A Conversation Piece

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19970202&slug=2521894

It's one of life's great unsolved mysteries: How come we can send a space probe to Mars but we can't make a decent toupee?

Or, more to the point, how can ABC newsman Sam Donaldson earn $2 million a year and still have such ridiculous hair?...

And during the 1700s, when skyscraper-like hairpieces sometimes soared 2 feet over the wearer's scalp, thieves trained monkeys to snatch the costly rugs off people's heads....

Modern toupee owners must cope with a different set of perils, including stand-up comedians and roller-coaster wind shear, in which the phrase "hair-raising thrill ride" takes on literal meaning.

We do make good "rugs" nowadays. Politicians are sometimes too cheap to buy them, though.

Great rugs in modern history:

And Sam's was once described in the NY Post as 'an Art Deco ashtray"!

Twenty years old or not, rugs are timeless!

In the 1960s, during an ABC WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS interview with Muhammad Ali (a.k.a. "Cassius Clay&quot sportscaster Howard Cosell was abruptly surprised to find his toupee playfully lifted off his head by the mischievous heavyweight champion.

Traficant (RIP) was in the same league as Buddy Cianci!

RIP, BC--he was a crook but he was never dull...!

As for Jim Traficant, he used to provide us with a morning laugh every day, when he would take the floor of the House and rail in a one-minute speech against this, that or the other thing. He would always ask "Mistah Speeeekuh" to "Beam. Me. UP!!!" because he was so furious about the topic at hand. He was NEVER boring, either! He was also very good at constituent services which is why his constituents kept returning him to Congress even when he was regarded as sketchy as hell.

Sample One Minute Speech:

Sometimes one's own hair, no matter how tortuously coiffed is pretty pathetic.

Smart people in public life know they can be written off as a business expense!!

The woman who plays The Good Wife on TV wears full wigs that are quite realistic. The reason is that they wanted to make her look more WASPish, plus, they could pull out an old wig from a season past and do a flashback easily!
