Hugs for Derek the wombat! Squee for Tasmanian tourism

BBC story here

From the article:

Despite the promise of being "chief wombat cuddler", Tourism Tasmania's Phil Souter told the BBC that access to Derek would be entirely "at the discretion of the handler" and would be "very carefully monitored by his handler and carer".

We visited Australia a few years ago when our daughter was living there with her husband. And we visited an animal sanctuary where they had all kinds of lovely native animals. FYI (in case you didn't know) wombats come equipped with a hard, boney plate in their backsides so that if a wombat chooses to scoot down a hole to hide from predators, she can block the entrance with her rather impressive and impregnable (in the battering ram sense) butt. She also sends her babies down into the hole first, so they are well protected.
