Watching Mayerling now w/ Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer.

The film quality is horrible, but the story is fascinating. Does anyone know about it? What do you think happened?

Was it a murder/suicide, an outright murder from outside forces, something else? What do you think if you know anything about the story?

I've watched several documentaries about the incident on YouTube - you can find lots of info there.

Are there any that have a solid, reliable theory or are most of them still all speculation?

... but I watched the docs more than a year ago, and don't remember specific titles, etc.

I watch a lot of documentaries on YouTube, and I find that you know within the first ten minutes whether it's a worthwhile one or not. Most are well researched and presented - the "sensationalized" ones are usually not worthwhile, and present like a "Hard Copy" type of show.

I've also found that docs about historic events such as this that were produced for the BBC are usually very, very well done.

This particular incident is bound to be based on some speculation, as the real story of what went on in the last few days at Mayerling is unknown. But a good documentary will add known facts and historical context, so the speculation is often based on what WAS known at the time via accounts from people who knew the couple and were familiar with the events leading up to their tragic ending.

Happy viewing!

with Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve. The soundtrack is beautiful. I've always been fascinated with this story too. Haven't seen the Hepburn version but would like to.
