Need help with a frog terrarium project.

Last edited Wed Nov 2, 2016, 09:13 PM - Edit history (1)

I want to put together something that fits into my garden decor so I'm going to do the dollar store picture frame DIY. Here's my question: How air tight must a terrarium be to be successful? I figure I can use rubber silicone to make it air tight in all places, except the one area where I plan to use as an access door.

Anyone have any other suggestions? i.e., Does it need a light bulb for warmth?

There won't be an actual frog in there, I hope? The Velveteen Ocelot Nov 2016 #1
It will encase the two centimeter size frogs that I've seen around the house. Baitball Blogger Nov 2016 #2
There should probably be some sand or moss in the terrarium The Velveteen Ocelot Nov 2016 #3
I suspect they eat tiny bugs that crawl under the mulch. Baitball Blogger Nov 2016 #4

And I'll only keep them long enough to find out if they are just babies, or adult sized.

on the bottom, and a dish of water. If the frogs are going to be there just a short time they should be ok. Will you give them bugs to eat?

So, I'll wait until spring when I'm more likely to have those around. Don't think there's anything commercial that I can buy that can feed something that small.

You can feed them fruitflies, springtails, etc, and they are available both in certain pet shops and online.

The terrarium floor I'd use a few different materials for different humidities. Mulch, eco earth, sphagnum moss, etc. to offer different humid hides, as well as a shallow saucer for fresh water.

I made one in about 1973, when houseplants were really trendy, and it lasted for years and years. I remember charcoal was involved.

Where did you find dollar store frame DIY? Are there instructions or a website for that?

such a nice project.
