Saw "Manchester by the Sea"

Towards the end I wondered, and before I could finish my question, spouse replied: yes, the characters there probably did vote for Trump.

Hard to watch movie but I think that it, and Casey Affleck deserve the Oscars. I saw La La Land, liked it, but neither the movie nor the actor can be compared. Affleck is in every frame.

On the other hand, I don't understand why Michelle Williams is nominated as best supporting actress. She was barely on the screen 10 minutes.

But then, of course, I am no movie critic..

She's hardly in it. I like her acting but in this film, I don't think it's enough.

I haven't seen the two you mentioned but I did see

Fences
Lion
Hidden figures
Hacksaw ridge
Florence Foster Jennings

You need to see Arrival. It is intriguing. Movie about choices, communication, sacrifice, trust, and change.

Also saw Loving. We don't go much to see movies but once the good ones are out, toward the end of the year, we rush to see them. Was glad that Loving was re-released to a discount theater earlier this year. Was hoping for Florence Foster Jenkins but it did not.

Oh, and earlier in the year we saw Zootopia. Really nice and... did send a message about pre-conceived notions.

What happened with us was we got 40 minutes into it and got interrupted by an unexpected house guest. So we picked up where we left off the next evening and I told my wife I was eager to see where the movie goes. Then over the next hour or so, I kept wondering "when the heck is this going to end?"

It was a great acting performance by Casey Affleck, no doubt about it. And I don't need a feel-good movie every time. But, man, that movie was somber and depressing.

The Oscar acting nominations are done by the the members of the acting branch of the Academy. So while a certain performance may not be all that impressive to the general public, actors found it outstanding.

Many thought she should have won the Best Actress Oscar for Mrs Brown the previous year instead of Helen Hunt for As Good As It Gets.

When it's described as "gut-wrenching", I wonder why I should subject myself to that. Life is gut-wrenching enough. Politics certainly is right now. I use pop culture to escape pain not wallow in it.
