Am I the only person who didn't watch the Oscars?

Ok, I'm in a different time zone, and didn't want to stay up, but really the only picture I've seen was LaLa Land.

Yes, we need to support the arts. Yes, it's important to 'recognize' important work. Yes, people in the business work hard.

And though we work in 'the business', the award shows are, in my mind, increasingly irrelevant.

I hit it right as some less interesting categories were announced, then saw the Memoriam segment (good, but then only mentioned Paxton and didn't have his photo--shame, this is Hollywood, for gawd's sakes)....

I did see the Kimmel opening monologue online, though. He seemed to do a good job.

Bringing the entire audience to their feet in thunderous applause, a large mirror wheeled onto the stage Sunday evening at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony reportedly received a resounding six-minute-long standing ovation.

Haven't watched a WHOLE Oscar show since Native American Civil Rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather went up on stage in 1973 to tell the Academy that Marlon Brando would be declining the Oscar for his role in the Godfather. Now THAT was powerful ....

I've watched tiny bits of Oscar reviews here and there, but have had very little hunger to watch the Oscars ever since I was 12. I'm now 55.

I hardly ever go to movie theatres any more; I wait for movies to be available on Netflix or TV. And I'm so damn old that I wouldn't recognize most of the actors if they turned up on my doorstep. So the Oscars just don't interest me much.

Pre-show, red carpet, the bizarre ending! Loved the fashion - outstanding lovely dresses. Jimmy Fallon was really good, one of the best hosts; he kept it moving along with gentle jibes and humor! I have to have a change of outlook, with frivolity now and then, because of the depressing news out there. Haven't seen any of the movies, but watching last night showed me which ones I really want to see. Glad the awards were spread out to numerous worthy movies and actors winning something. A lot of diversity last night - very good to see.

and only because some friends invited me over for an Oscar watch party. This year I'd actually seen most of the pictures up for awards in various categories, which made it somewhat interesting.

The political humor was wonderful, and the screw up at the end about Best Picture was epic, and I'm glad I got to see it live.

But the show does go on too long, and I considered bailing out and going home about three quarters of the way through. But that would have been entirely too rude even for me.

Probably won't watch them next year, unless a certain acquaintance of mine who has a strong Hollywood connection were to invite me to watch with her. Which isn't very likely to happen since we are not close friends.

I only watched video of the mix-up for "Best Picture" on YouTube after seeing it reported on the news, so I was a little curious how that transpired.

I'm guessing that Trump watched it since he's very celebrity-conscious, even if he denies it.

I usually look at reports of the winners, however, and then decide if the movies seem intriguing to me.

What's considered Oscar-worthy is often not that good. The Oscars loves movies about the industry itself and also serious, weighty dramas which are often just really boring. In my opinion.

But this time they may have gotten it right, but I am not going to see Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea because I am sick to death of movies about pain and suffering. I want oblivion, not reality. I want uplifting, not depressing. I saw Hidden Figures and enjoyed it for that reason.

I still haven't seen Twelve Years a Slave because it's a "homework" movie. Too many historical movies feel like homework that you have to trudge through because it's "important" or is a message movie. Nope, I'm all about pop culture comfort food right now.

I watched my first award show in 1964, when I was 7.

Haven't been interested in the drawn out affair since.

I read up on who was nominated and who the winners were.
