(30,481 posts)I will say it is somewhat of an accomplishment. It has been written up in just about every newspaper in the country, talked about on just about every news show, and increased the value of an established company overnight the likes of which we have rarely ever seen. A couple of months ago you couldn't get around knowing about it in my area if you just walk out your door.

(26,262 posts)I have to admit that since I retired, I've been busy with family situations, dealing with being a first time home owner and emotionally recuperating from a couple of horrific years. I've developed a bad habit of tuning out things that don't hit my 'interest' scale. That is probably a habit I should change.
My youngest nephew used to collect the cards - I'm guessing it is the same Pokemon stuff, just evolved into something else.

(30,481 posts)It's an app that is a game. I have played with a lot of retired people. They get into it because of their kids and grandkids. I first got into it because of my nephew. It got him outside and we have gone to some really cool places together.

(26,262 posts)Now that my energy level is returning to normal, I'm all for learning new things and going to cool places, that's for sure.

(13,188 posts)I have actually been playing Pokemon since the mid-nineties.
My Son was 4 when Pokemon came out in Japan, (i was stationed there at the time) and would play the card game with him back then.
We both worked our way through the Gameboy Pokemon game generations as they came out for each progressive platform - Gameboy, Gameboy color Gameboy advance etc...
So of course 20+ years later I play this iteration as well. Plus it keeps me walking the dog longer and she appreciates that.

(30,481 posts)That was months ago and he is still out walking. It has had a positive influence on his life.

(13,188 posts)Also, Pokemon Go became, for me, a kind of judgemental litmus test.
It was "oh, you play games? Just sit on that couch eating hot pockets AMIRITE?" then it was "These guys are just walking around getting hit by cars, AMIRITE?"
Either way, we get to pass judgement on gamers...
Whatever.
I like the game, I like to shoot zombies from time to time as well. Unfortunately it seems that a large group of people just want to piss on the pass times they don't like.

(14,487 posts)It helps me pass the time when I am out walking, and has really motivated me to get out of the house at times when I would rather have stayed in bed with the TV on half the day.

(15,381 posts)They give you a Pokemon to catch right away, and then you go walking to find more. I switched my phone over to show the animated map of my neighborhood and walked around for 3 miles and didn't see another damn one. Something was happening on my phone, making me think a Pokemon was going to appear so I stood outside a house with my phone pointed toward it for 2 minutes before I thought, "Someone is going to come out here and shoot me." Looking it over, what with the gyms and the other things, it was just too much for me to put effort into. Plus, I never liked Pokemon to begin with. Uninstalled.
I did want to go down to the Plaza (I live in Kansas City) and walk around with my phone out and every now and then yell, "Oh, my God! It's a <insert name of rare Pokemon>!" just to see how people would react, but I figured that would get me killed as well.

(1,606 posts)Guess I'm not really into those kind of games. I've watched several game-related animes over the years but never played the actual games LOL

(11,914 posts)Of course, my husband is really competitive and takes it to a whole other level. He likes to win at anything he does, but it's been good for him. He's walking more, has gotten back into biking in good weather and has gone from a 36 (almost 38) to a 34 waist. We've also gone on family hikes, seen historic markers that we never really noticed before and been to parks we didn't know existed, etc. Personally, I wish you could hatch the darned eggs and walk your buddies on the treadmill. I hate walking beyond a stroll in our neighborhood (thousands of acorns and monkeyballs up/down hills on paved surfaces scare me) and being diabetic I'm supposed to walk for exercise. Strolling doesn't count
Unfortunately the game also brings out the worst in some people, and usually they are not the ones who are players. A friend of ours (24yo) was walking with a neighbor (60+) on Saturday, and someone from the area they live in came out of their house and yelled at them in the street. He told the younger friend to shut up and go back to her parent's basement. She stood up for herself, but she should never have been spoken to like that. They were just walking down the sidewalk minding their own business. She did tell him that perhaps he should be aware that the area is not a gated community.

(30,481 posts)That is awesome about your husband. Well, all of you for that matter. It's great experiencing new parks.

(10,893 posts)level 26 for the past few weeks. Once you start getting into the 20's, it takes forever to level up, especially if you're like me and can't play everyday. Two of the reasons why I can't play daily are because I have to watch my data limit, and because it has rained almost constantly in the Bay Area and I don't want my phone to get ruined.
Right now, I'm playing with the goal of just catching the original 151 Pokemon. I don't care much about catching the newer Pokemon because there are way too many, and as they keep adding more to the game, it becomes impossible to "catch 'em all". Once I either hit level 50 or catch all the original Pokemon, I'm done for good. Even as a staunch PokeFanatic, I'm not as wild about this game as the handhelds. It lags too much, and all you can do in the game is catch Pokemon and battle gyms. Also the gym battling thing looks lame.

(30,481 posts)Save up for a minimum of sixty evolutions. Crack a lucky egg and then do them all within the allotted thirty minutes. It doubles the points for each evolution.
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)evolve Pokemon while using Lucky Eggs, and I have incenses and lures set up during the 30 minutes so I have more Pokemon spawn and gain twice the amount of points for catches and Poke Stop swipes. Even when doing that, it still takes a while to level up.
