lurk quite a bit, but do not post much, just thought this was so awesome..... big bad accident on our states major interstate today, both ways were blocked for hours, and a smart food purveyor took advantage, and just pulled his taco wagon right on the interstate and started feeding the tired stressed commuters. Almost made me a little jealous i wasn't in that backup. Almost.

(1,756 posts)Now it's the place just south of the VA state line, where you can buy cheap cigarettes, fireworks, etc, but allegedly, it began with a Mexican hitchhiker selling a ham sandwich to a traffic laden motorist for 5bucks back in the early 70s. He thought to himself, shit, if someone will pay me that for basically nothing, this seem like a good spot to sell anything........
I still stop there any time I pass through

My family lived in the D.C. Area in the late 60's and traveled to South Florida back before I95 was constructed. US 301 was one of the primary roads south along the eastern seaboard back then and I remember the billboards that still exist every mile or so, starting at least 150 miles north and south of the attraction.
And no, it didn't start by a Mexican guy selling a sandwich

(1,756 posts)Appreciate the education.....I knew that story was a bit off, that "Pedro" wile not being able to catch a ride, happened upon a motorist who was so hungry he paid an exorbitant amount for his sandwich, which gave him the idea to start a food vending spot, and that was the start of the attraction....but I guess that's just an urban myth they tell gringos.....
A HERETIC I AM
(24,320 posts)But "SOB" is sort of a cherished part of my childhood! I've been through there numerous times as a kid and dozens more as a trucker.
As hard as we looked, we were never able to find "Pedro", much less a Dillon resident that had a Mexican accent!

(1,756 posts)I don't drive for a living, or even much drive.....my boyfriend does most of that.....but we travel a lot... road numbers kinda blur as doe states, like days of the week. He just bitched me out asking "seriously? You can't remember what state South of the Border is in......"
My sincere apologies
But I'm sticking by the fact I've been told that urban myth................
