(15,336 posts)Saw the current version of The Who last year. They still kicked ass. Pete has always gotten the "Great Rythym" guitarist tag. Completely underated for his lead work

(15,336 posts)For his lead work. I think Pete Townsend is a fantastic guitarist and The Who are my favorite band. To this day, still the best live band ever.
But to a lot of the critics, Pete is the equivalent of the "white possession receiver" in the NFL. They don't put him in the same category of Jimmy Page for example, but I think Pete blows Page away.

(18,837 posts)Most of the bands / performers who covered John Lee Hooker turned his songs into something else.
Perfect example, George Thorogood had a phenomenally popular version of "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," but it sounded like every other George Thorogood song. The Animals and The Yardbirds turned in reasonably faithful versions of Hooker songs but still ended up sounding like The Animals and The Yardbirds.
But Simmonds really went for that true Hooker sound, always more emotional than precise, just gut-level stomping.
That and perhaps the weirdest lead vocalist of all time, Chris Youlden, made this one a "10."

(13,191 posts)Ernie ever loving Isley has been criminally over looked for decades. He plays all the instruments and sings on this track, and my only complaint is that he should've hired a drummer
Robert Cray doesn't get main stream props but he was a regular on the Crossroads shows, so i guess his peers know.

(54,414 posts)At least I think he's still around. He used to play bass for Steely Dan. I saw him do lead guitar on a tour here a few years ago, and I was impressed. He has no business going anywhere near the microphone, but his lead guitar playing was way better than I expected.
George Marinelli, Jr. is another. He used to be a member of Bruce Hornsby's old group, the Range. Lately, I've seen him touring with Bonnie Raitt, which makes sense, since Hornsby and Bonnie have worked together before.

I hope he is not underrated. He is one of the few greats that is still with us and out there touring as I type!

(27,821 posts)I think he is underrated by many rock critics.
As a native San Franciscan, I've seen Santana many times, at many different venues around SF, including free concerts in places like Mission Dolores Park, which is across the street from where Carlos Santana went to high school, (Mission High School)
Carlos Santana started playing guitar when he was 8 years old.

(20,876 posts)Was in the vicinity for 1/2 of my life. It was good for awhile and there were sure a lot of greats hatched out of that era!
I remember Stoneground, the Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen with Hot Tuna, Credence Clearwater Revival/John Fogerty, etc.
And then there was the great Santana!
I hope to see him again some day. He seems to be doing well and I enjoyed his CD/DVD Corazón. Very good stuff there!
