BTW: Sal Mineo is STUPENDOUS as GK in the movie. Sal is really playing the drums, too; he learned for the movie (that is to say, it is Sal without a double; but Gene is the drummer we actually hear). And afterwards, Gene GAVE to Sal his, Gene's, own set of drums!

"The Gene Krupa Story (1959) – released in the United Kingdom as Drum Crazy – introduced Keith Moon’s biggest influence to him, Gene Krupa. Gene was Keith Moon’s first big drumming hero. With his over the top performances, crazy showmanship trickery, and bigger than life charisma, Gene Krupa influenced Keith Moon tremendously."

http://andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/drums/influences/index.htm
"Gene Krupa was the first rock drummer in very many ways. Without Gene Krupa, there wouldn't have been a Keith Moon."

https://jbonamassa.com/drummers-got-beat/
"One of Keith Moon’s earliest drum heroes was jazz legend Gene Krupa. He was extremely influenced by the film Drum Crazy which was a biography of Krupa. Keith loved the way that Gene Krupa took an instrument that usually sat in the background and made it an integral piece of the foreground of the music. He wanted to bring all of the colorful personality of a frontman to the drums."

Even without these affirmations, one can readily see that the wildness of Krupa rubbed off on KM big-time.

....I believe he started out with Delaney Bonnie & Friends, with Eric Clapton, back in the late sixties/early seventies. At one point he was the most in demand rock drummer. Every group wanted him to play on their recording sessions. And not just rockers, either. Judy Collins had him drumming on her "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" album.

He wrote the coda to "Layla". Clapton acknowledged that Gordon was an incredible drummer, but said he was scared to death of him. It all came to an end when schizophrenia got the best of him and he went after his momma with a claw hammer. If he's not dead by now, he's still locked up.

he really is one the most well-rounded and most musical drummers of the rock era.

He told me that when he was 15 he was playing with a jazz group and the guys would leave the stage during drum solos to go get drinks, and sometimes left him up there playing alone for 20-30 minutes at a time so he had to learn how to entertain crowds just with his drum playing.

91. The best drummer is a guy you never heard of (no, it's not Nicko McBrain)
Thu Mar 16, 2017, 04:51 AM
Mar 2017

His name is Josh Freese, and he's a session cat.

Here's him playing:

Here's his discography: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Freese_discography

This guy could be playing post-punk in Los Angeles on Monday night, get a phone call "yeah, this is Toby Keith...we're in a bind, man; we're recording at Abbey Road; we decided to jam a little at a pub and our drummer exploded on stage; could you be here in 24 hours to help us finish the record?"...he'd fly over there, record his part in two takes and be back in LA playing better-quality music by Friday.

It's very hard to be an expert drummer in one genre of music; it's damn near impossible to be an expert drummer in all genres of music, but Josh Freese is up to the challenge.
