It took me a few seconds to see it. There really is a face hidden there.
A Japanese psychologist with a fondness for optical illusions has baffled the internet with his latest a picture of a mans smiling face, which just looks like a blank grid.
But there really is a face in there: you just have to work a bit harder to see it.
Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a psychology professor at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, produced the image with a grid layered over a low-contrast image.
Theres various tricks you can use to make the image clearer, Kitaoka says including standing at a distance, viewing the image at an angle or simply scrolling up and down with a mouse.

OP
cool - easiest way to see it is scroll the picture up and down smoothly. Really neat!

Up close I struggled to see a vague outline of a face, but from a distance...

(31,515 posts)1. I can see it, but it's faint.
It reminds me of those "magic" 3D pictures from a few years back.

when I tilted the top of my screen away from me.
Quick scrolling worked, too.

Tilted the screen way away from me and could see him pretty clearly.

plus sitting at a distance and then moving the laptop screen back (tilted), gave a lot more detail on either one alone.

..it was easy to see a vague outline of a face.
This will never replace 1080p.
