Can you name a baby animal that isn't adorable?
I don't understand why all baby animals are so absolutely adorable. I understand why human babies are adorable to us humans, but why ALL baby animals?
And are there any exceptions?

1. Possibly the Hyena, but I can tell you why they are almost always so adorable....
|
...because if they weren't the parents would kill them, eat them, or give them away for being so noisy and stinky and troublesome.
But when they are SO CUTE you can live with that!

4. But why are they adorable to humans?
|
Cute piglets don't generally depend on humans for survival, so why are they so damned adorable?

Baby snakes just look like mini snakes.
OK let's leave reptiles and insects out of it, I think those babies might not be so cute. |

Last edited Thu Apr 12, 2012, 08:10 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Birds, too and even many amphibians and reptiles. Think of baby turtles--cute. Frogs, toads, salamander young are pretty cute. Snakes? Not so much. Insect young? Not so much.

Last edited Thu Apr 12, 2012, 09:02 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) I really do not get "squee" feelings from people grubs. Or birds at any stage of development. Or most mammals. Some of them have a sleek kinda beauty, or eye catching characteristics. But squee? None for me, thanks.
Ok, maybe I exaggerate a bit for hyperbole sake. I may or may not admit at times to finding some potentially "cute" factors existing in certain animals of the youthful persuasion, such as otters, ferrets or squirrels. And an occasional dog or cat. And maybe one in 30 people grubs(the rest are hideous). But you cannot prove it. Squee, like "cold", is purely a state of mind, with no scientific reality. I refuse to be cold, and I feel no need for squee. Oh... Also...

28. I've read it has to do with the facial ratios.
|
All infants have big eyes, rounded faces, large foreheads, and other features that just shreik to us humans "You'll feel REAL good if you like me!" Wonderful interspecies survival instinct. Sadly, too many humans fall prey to that and adopt things they have no business having.

39. I agree! And that's cuz I was the ugliest baby on the block!
|
Born 23 inches long and weighing a little under 6lbs...yeah, not cute. More like a sausage with noodle arms and legs.
And yes, I ultimately grew to 7' (kidding! I'm only 6'1") and gained another 140 lbs. So now I'm a very TALL and very OLD sausage with noodle arms and legs. However, I'm prettier now than when I was a baby! (not a high bar to pass, really! |
