The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI won't buy a Volkswagen ever......just saw an advertisement using
the Mary Tyler Moore theme song for it. "You're going to make it after all" That's her song.....not for some damn advertisement, even tho it is about a woman becoming a VP of some company. It just bothers me that it's being used for advertising.

(62,444 posts)The entire point of television programming is to get people to watch the ads.
VW, a car company originally inspired by Hitler, engages in deliberate emissions fraud for years in order to essentially lie about their diesel vehicles and does untold damage to the environment in the process, but it takes the use of the Mary Tyler Moore theme for you to draw the line?

(17,871 posts)Messiah being used in advertising. MTM Show - not so much.
I will give you one that can be disturbing on a warped level. An old woman is seen traveling in a VW van with her family cross country. At the end it is to scatter the ashes of her husband (father/grandfather). She has a vaguely European accent.
VW, old European woman, and ashes - you can get the association. It takes a perverse mind to come up with it - both my daughter and I did in the theater. Maybe it says something about my family.

Millions without decent drinking water.
Global temperatures climbing every year, soon to make some parts of the world uninhabitable.
Pointless wars everywhere.
A madman in the White House.
Worldwide fisheries being depleted, and the oceans are dying.
Drought, disease, famine, racism, the resurgence of Nazis and other hate groups.
Racial discrimination.
Misogyny.
Healthcare costs spiraling out of reach for most people.
...etc., etc., etc.
And you get your shorts in a bunch over a TV jingle?
Really?
