I wonder how very different our world would be if he had accepted a certain nation's offer of the presidency in 1952. Maybe it wouldn't be much different at all. But then, maybe it would be completely different.

Missed opportunities.

I'll take Nationalism every time. At least in a democracy, one can vote the F-kers out. In Fascism, no such luck (ps: guess which state we are in now--voted anybody out, lately? Had a real choice between candidates? How about free and fair elections, with no money advantage?)

in which people actually own the means of production. In terms of elections it seems that we should be able to use our advanced technology to ensure one person, one vote. I don't know that representative democracy makes sense anymore (especially if the representatives are hell bent on representing corporations rather than people). As David Swanson always says "Let's try democracy".

ETA - just in case there are folks who haven't come across Swanson. He used to post on DU but I haven't seen him here in ages. Here's one of his websites: http://davidswanson.org/

He just looks bright. Sort of the opposite of dead eyes, soulless, Cantor.

they all look like that. I like to refer to them as the undead, but it's probably not nice to stereotype perfectly decent vampires by comparing them to those monsters.
