Alice In Chains - The Rooster
Rooster is the 5th song of the album ''Dirt''
Lyrics:
Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids, household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere
Yeah they come to snuff the rooster
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die
Here they come to snuff the rooster
Ah yeah, yeah
Yeah, here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die
Yeah they come to snuff the rooster
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die
Walkin' tall machine gun man
They spit on me in my home land
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
Got my pills 'gainst mosquito death
My buddy's breathin' his dyin' breath
Oh god please won't you help me make it through
Yeah they come to snuff the rooster, ah yeah
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, you know he ain't gonna die

OP
Dirt is a magnum opus. There isn't a song that sucks on that album. I am partial to Hate to Feel

I keep hoping for a grunge revival, but it never happens. That was the last time period where I got reality excited about new music.

Not super unusual chords (except it's in F, which is a seldom used guitar key).
But, it's in Dorian, so there's this cool mix of major & minor chords and a diminished passing chord.
Plus, the bass pedals the F at times, so you have the "conflict" between the static low notes with the changing chords.
Pretty cool!

Another great one:
"Voices"
Who am I, is this me?
Am I one or thirteen?
I've gone cold, hard to deal
Used to stand where I kneel
Everybody listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
I want more, than I need
I don't know what is real
Everybody listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
Anytime I listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
Whispering of names, faces
Uniforms I've worn
And all that is gone
Always climbing
To fall down again
Holding onto everything
It's not what it seems
I've been told, dreaming's free
Think I'll go back to sleep
Everybody listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
Anytime I listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
Calling out the names, faces
Uniforms I've worn
And all that is gone
Always climbing
To fall down again
Holding onto everything
It's not what it seems

Watched a documentary on the life of Layne Staley yesterday on Youtube. How tragic. He was, by all accounts, a sweet, smart, funny, generous guy but had one hell of a monkey on his back. Eddie Vedder is the only great grunge singer still with us. Its so sad.
