(14,892 posts)I'm having fun shooting in black and white again.
I've photographed this clock at different times of the day and evening and in every season, but never thought of shooting it in black and white.
Taken yesterday on my walk home from work.

(90,779 posts)a branch of my family came down from the mountains. They brought the music and the dance of their former home with them. I grew up knowing the difference between a hootenanny and a hoedown....and a keen appreciation for the haunting melodies of the Appalachians. I still break into a buck dance/flat foot from time to time. My dogs love it. lol (Cause I only do it when no one else is home)

(60,075 posts)music of the mountains, and the four part harmony of the gospel have stayed with me as an urbanite.
I think four part harmony was referred to as four corner. There was also a thing called shape note.
This groups sings shape note.

(22,380 posts)never this close up - and that angle the others showed the area it sits in I think. I like the B/W version a lot.
The light of the face and the black of the case are great together.

(46,436 posts)Genius.
Finally getting around to working on some for fun. I liked yours from the fall contest taken at night, one reason is I had to look twice as it reminded me of a nighttime desert at first look. Hope you are still enjoying the grandbabies and getting you fill of hugs & kisses.

(46,436 posts)And I still have until Thursday afternoon. They are really adorable.

(22,380 posts)is what illustrates the word "perfect".
I absolutely love it and want to be there to see it myself.

(8,039 posts)I purposely did not use it though and now finally going through those in between trying to get wedding books done.
I'm trying to decide if I like yours better in black & white or color. It is wonderful in both.

(15,586 posts)What a great turn out already! I'm humbled to be part if this group. You guys are GOOD!
Intriguing is the least of the adjectives I can use for your photo.
There is so much going on, and so much to ponder. I utterly adore it. It catches me emotionally and visually.
Congrats from my house.

(1,576 posts)to express how incredible, beautiful, stunning, breathtaking, divine, exquisite, and on and on, all the entries are for this months contest.

(27,569 posts)I am sooo bad at capturing any kind of animal outside of humans. I am always envious of those of you who are good at it.

(27,569 posts)I had a heck of a time shrinking my B/W down. And, frankly, it is a bit lossy from the original The newer high-res cameras seem to start losing a bit when you take 800x X and then shrink below 250K.
Could we consider upping that to 300, or 350?

(2,029 posts)It kills me to save to medium-low quality jpeg. Surely, anyone who bothers to look at our contests is on broadband by now. I'd love to see the maximum dimension increased to 1024 as well. There can't be that many 15" monitors left out there.
JCMach1
(27,569 posts)I really noticed the loss in the B/W contest. It really affected the pic I used.

(8,761 posts)Most all photos benefit from being seen at a larger size with higher resolution.
Awesome photo, CC. Utterly perfect.

(22,380 posts)one after another the winners dribble in. I call them all winners because there is no way I can chose one over the other, I get privately rhapsodic over each of them.
Seeing them makes me realize we have not done nearly enough black and white.

(22,380 posts)AM I WRONG remembering you won first place with a photo of a meadow with some farm equipment in the foreground on the left.
Tell me I'm wrong.
Some are pros, some aren't. When they start talking their fancy talk I am clueless what they are talking about.
For instance the thread about photo size that got pinned to the top today. If they want them bigger I will use photobucket and click on the next larger size. That's all she wrote, because that's all I understand.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)but, really - I think the good cameras are "exposed" in this competition. It seems more noticeable in B/W. I am in way over my head.
I am not sure what you are talking about. I have never won a contest here. I don't think I have ever made the semi-finals even.
I do have a photo of a meadow (?) with a truck (?) somewhere in my photobucket that I think I entered -maybe- a couple of years ago
but, Yeah this B/W contest is amazing. I wish I could afford a decent camera. Actually, I wish I was better with the one I have
Mira
(22,380 posts)but not the standing it achieved. It's highly possible I liked it so much it won in my own mind. I know it's been a couple of years at least.
I hope you can get a good camera soon. Your enthusiasm makes you deserve it, so visualize it and maybe it will come to you.

(46,436 posts)How about black and white pictures of grandchildren? . I'm up to about 650 shots of them now. I'm sure I could find a good one to convert.
Mira
(22,380 posts)I'm picking up my jaw after each new entry yet again. I think we should stay on this new trend, and for the next year only have ONE color contest.
misschicken
(44 posts)but I definitely think the rewards are worth it. This is a beautiful set of photos already. It's amazing to see everyone's take on what a b&w should look like.
alfredo
(60,075 posts)needed to advance the story. Black and white edits out the color that distracts from, or doesn't advance the story you want to tell.
B&W gives one a lot freedom because there is no expectation of reality. In color everyone knows the color of a brick or a blade of grass, and expect it to be that color. B&W makes the viewer see beyond the color. B&W is liberating.

(1,536 posts)I do some color occasionally but B&W is now, and always will be, where my heart is at.
This is my third contest entry and, judging by the competition, I'm thinking that I'll not win this one either. These are almost all spectacular.

**I have been otherwise used up and not been out with my camera... I so miss it (my entry was one I took for the '100paces' and decided to enter it although I really like to shoot new photos for contests)**
I love the new entries and photographers we have been getting

(60,075 posts)I have a new used lens, the Olympus 40~150mm zoom. I'm hoping to get some use out of it this weekend.

(10,136 posts)I finally took a moment to slowly go through the submissions.
Love the layers in this one!
Mira
(22,380 posts)I like it a lot too, and even it I get no votes (entirely possible in this strongest field imaginable) it's the one I had to use.
I study your photo too, I've never been to Ireland, and it looks so representative of what I imagine. I like it better BTW in black and white.

(10,136 posts)Lots of old castles and the like. Lots of green countryside. (They get as much rain as Seattle.) Good food, friendly people.
